My horse fell over today whilst picking out her hoof, is this very unusual, not sure whether she just lost balance, it is the first time she has done this.

She got straight back up again and seems ok, would just like your views on this.

She has been slightly lame on the back leg for a week or so, nothing major just a bit short on back leg whilst lunging.

Thanks

Beverley

weird, My youngster has started to do this with me the last few days. Ive discovered he is just really foot sore and just falls as soon as i start picking his feet out.

Ive had a good look and he seems to have a bruised sole and a really tender frog on both fores.

Hopefully this should improve if the rain softens the ground a bit

Hi,

Thank you for replying, could this be a sign of laminitus starting up, they are out 24/7 now. She is 15 and never suffered before, but I know it does not mean they can't.

One of the 17.2 horses on the farm has come down with lami this last week.

She has not heat in her feet at all, and is not showing any other signs of lameness.

Thanks

Beverley

Ive had horses for years but knew nothing about laminitis until i lost a 4 year old 2 months ago to it, he'd never suffered with any lamness before, just found him one day in the Feburary in the snow suddenly with it.

There are lots of people on here that have a lot more experience of it, but it just fears me now it any horse is foot sore.

hope i havent scared you, its more likely to be bruised soles. Just ask your blacksmith to pop around.

I knew one horse was footsore..

sounds stupid but she was ok on softish ground, but when she trod on..rocky roads for example, she went lame for a bit, and her one feet seemed sore. Quite self explanatory but..

to be honest, I dont know if the foot looks any different, but she was flat footed.

You can do little hoof tests with a hoof pick on certain areas for soreness.

I never been able to notice by just looking at the sole, however the blacksmith once pointed out a really bruised area which was almost redened, the hoof was a white one so easier to spot.

I noticed he was sore in his feet when i was picking his feet out, he feel to the floor bless him, hes really sore though, especially around his frog and heel. I called my blacksmith this morning just incase but he confirmed he has bruised soles. we have quite rocky mountain here which doesnt help.

Hello Notpoodle, how are you then and how is Angel?
If the horse is footsore, it will be walking ginerly over hard or stony ground. It may be even lame. This could affect one or all four feet. There will almost certainly be heat in the foot as well and this could confuse just soreness with laminitis. The ground is so hard at the moment that I think there'll be a lot of horses with sore feet.

Bim fell over once when i was picking her feet out, she was quite stiff with arthritis at the time and i think she was just trying to stand more comfortably and got it wrong. Shes never done it since. I wouldnt be too worried if shes only done it once but keep an eye on her for any discomfort :)

My old cob fell over once when I was picking out his near fore. It was as if he'd fallen asleep! He started leaning on me, that was fairly normal for him, then he began leaning so hard I thought I'd snap so I had to drop his foot. Next thing I knew he was on his knees on the yard looking up at me all confused. No damage done to either of us but I was pretty shook up. After that if he leant on me, he got a sharp elbow in the ribs - it never happened again!
