Yesterday my daughter (bless her) was sharing her bottle of summer fruits with her horse, by pouring it into her hand where she was holding the lid.

Of course, the horse took the lid - chewed it (we know that because we were trying to poke our fingers in to get it back!) and swallowed it.

It is a plastic robinsons bottle lid from a 1 litre bottle.

Is this a vet problem, and something else to go on my this months bill? Or is it something that is likely to take it's natural course?

I'm reluctant to phone the vet and say 'is this a vet problem' because after 12 months of horse ownership they have yet to say 'no'.

Rnig the vet and ask - the call costs nothing, (okay maybe 10p) but advice is free, and often a call as soon as you worry saves a vet bill a couple of days later when problem has escalated.

I have seen stranger things in poos, without knowing it went down in the first place. :D :D

Phone the vet and ask, they really won't mind.

I don't think you should worry too much. Pretty sure it'll come out the back end, same as it went in the front! ;)

Others are right though, worth a phone call to the vet as they can advise you symptoms to look out for if it is causing an obstruction etc.

Basil chewed up my (naughty) farriers cigarette end and swallowed it the other day. The vet happened to be there at the time and just mildly commented "your horse is eating tobacco" whilst lazing against the fence!! I thought well if he's not bothered, I'm not either!!:D

id def say ring the vet, although the lid is smoth on the top, if it managed to swallow it the other way where it breaks off from the bottle, this could have scratched and cut on the way down, also horses cant be sick so should it block he wont be able to get it back up, fingers crossed he passes it easy enough but would def give the vets a ring

My boy swallowed a bottle top once-was in his bed the next morning in one of his poo's :D (This was when I first got him) I panicked but thought there was nothing I could do until nature took its course......and it popped out the next morning :o

I think that if he is breathing OK and can eat and drink, I don't see reason to call the vet. The most danger would occur in obstructing the airway but if this is clear (which it would be if he can eat and drink), I think that you just need to wait for him to pass it out. What exactly would the vet do if you called him? Other than perform an operation to remove it, there is nothing that can be done. Obviously keep a close eye on the pony and if there are any signs of colic get the vet out, but I'm sure that it will just pass through in a day or so.

Thankyou all so much!

Someone on the yard (helpfully) was talking colic and iminent death. You know how they do.

Anyway, he's still fine - eating and drinking - and gone out to fill his belly with grass to push it through.......

phoned the vets, both nurses say not to worry, keep an eye and call them if he seems in trouble.

Phew.

My friend's horse ate a leather glove! No one realised at the time - she assumed she'd left it somewhere - and then 2 days later she went to muck out his stable and there it was - lodged in the top of a large dropping, much like a cherry on top of a cake  :D
