Hello,

I am new horse and just got into the crazy world of horses. Crazy, I know, and I'm a guy, too, which, makes it somewhat weird considering how I was told horses and horseback riding is a girls sport and mostly dominated by girls.

Anyway, I have gotten a makeshift riding out that I need you gals opinions on what to change or alter so I look respectable at an Equestrian center. I have heard that some of these places have a strict dress appeal for English riding with their riders. I intend to do English riding entirely.

Here is a brief picture of my attire. I am wearing a Shire Saddle Hugger Jodhpur Cotton Breeches pants and Ariat paddock boots.

I did have half chaps but the zipper broke on one of them and I may have to buy a new pair. I am curious if I need half chaps or if it is recommend entirely before I start my lessons? Any opinions entirely on what I'm wearing would be appreciated and see you on the horse forums and saddle lol.

Looks fine to me for your first lesson. Smarter, but not essential, if you get either half chaps or long boots - with short boots the stirrup leathers can pinch your legs. Hat is essential; body protector, I'd say optional. Have fun, and don't forget to come back and tell us about it.

Yup what they said, might be worth checking if the centre you are attending does have a dress code tho im sure they wont mind too much for your first lesson or two

Fine for now as long as you have a hat. But I find that short boots without chaps mean I get rubs from the stirrup leathers.

Good luck and enjoy!

It might be worth asking if the centre will lend you a hat. A lot of riding schools do, but they would probably be a bit scruffy and not very well fitting. I'm guessing you're in the US - it might be different over there. I'd say it's certainly worth asking them what you should wear, or have a look on their website if they have one.

Hat and definitely half chaps or you may have some nice bruises on your legs. The stirrup leather can pinch.
As people have said some riding schools supply hats but if it's something your intending on doing regular then I'd highly recommend getting your own hat, lots of choice best to go to a store and get fitted for one :-)
Plenty guys in the horse world I think know us girls just talk much more about it :p;)

Have fun and we love photos :D

I didnt have half chaps for the first 6 months - no pinching either - see how you go. And when I come to think of it OH didnt either - Men often ride in jeans with no half chaps.

Definitely another +1 on the hat - again, depending on the school, you may be able to borrow one. I'm a new rider too, and male into the bargain too and i wore jeans and wellies for the first few lessons (i did buy good gloves though - i'm a biker and i'm just used to wearing them!) but i have, just this week bought the same jods as you (in black) and some long riding boots. I'm sure long boots aren't to everyones taste, but i intend to do a fair few common ridings next year and they appear to be part of the dress code (certainly for men anyway).
Anyway - good luck!
Oh, and remember to share your experiences with the rest of us :D its good to talk o_O
