On an island
That the weather is going to be snowy and cold this autumn / winter? I am not knowing whether to stock up on hay - because our supplier cannot get down to our place when the snow comes - and it might come and stay for quite some time, like it did the other year! Am I worrying over nowt do you think or should I make the storage room and pay out and get it delivered early? I would need to stock up on bedding too. Not really got the spare cash atm, but I can find if I have to. Just wondering if this bad weather is all an urban legend?????? Help NR!!!!! (Particularly Northern ones!)

I think there's nothing wrong with a bit of forward planning, I'd be stocking up, as there is nothing worse than getting caught short..

Better safe than sorry tbh if you struggle getting supplies when the heavy snow comes. A couple of us on the yard started getting a couple of bales of shaving each month. Saves the one large hit outlay. We are on a farm so we have copious amounts of hay and straw for the winter (dont use straw personally but will use it if I cannot get shavings, or they are a stupid price)

I think OH is leaning towards better safe than sorry mode! Other year was a nightmare, as we could get out in our Landy, but of course, it was limited as to how much we could fit in the back (despite not having seats in there). Think I'll make the arrangements - it will all get eaten and used afterall, not like I'm wasting our money........

I've not heard much in the way of it around my neck of the woods. However I've seen more snow the past 2 winters than I've seen in my lifetime so I'm thinking it might be a regular thing!

We live in the back of beyond and have to be prepared for anything. So we generally are.

Been snowed in for a week and been non the worse for it, with no electricity too. They sent a helicopter in with the guys from Hydro electric in the end. The digger was another 3 days getting to us!

When I put the windscreen wipers on this morning they showered the car with slush and sleety stuff that had collected on top of the wipers.

You know just a few years ago deep snow in winter was the norm, then we went through a decade with hardly a sprinkle, people adapted to not having to worry about it, and now it's the end of the world! Climate change bla de bla..
When will scientists, and weathermen realize you can't change the world's behaviour (this is mother nature I'm talking about)..
We've been on this planet long enough to see what the world can throw at us, so what's changed? Too much technology, to many people who think they know best thats what's changed.. and an opportunity to hold the population to ransom with high taxes, high fuel costs.. it's all a fix
Remember the hole in the Ozone? When was that last mentioned? I'll get off my soap box now :)
Ps.. as a child living in Yorkshire (Leeds) I remember snow being up to my knees several years running, so it's not that unusual...

Better to be safe than sorry! I'm so grateful that this year Henry is on an assisted yard where (horsey) YO lives on site, it's just a shame it's on a hill in the middle of no where!

At our yard we have our normal hay/haylage but YO also has some emergency small bales stored in the lorry barn just in case.

Thankfully the guy that delivers our hay/haylage is young and enjoys a challenge so is willing to trailer out to us at the first sign of snow starting!

I don't believe it will be bad all over uk. However i do believe the NE corner where i live will be badly hit. We always are, difference is because we aren't south of the border it's never reported by the england-centric bbc! Been stood waiting for vet all morning in winter woolies and horses rugged in medium weights. it was sleeting for a good couple of hours.

That the weather is going to be snowy and cold this autumn / winter?

Going by how cold it is today and the fact my car was iced over sunday morning...............I beleive it will be snowy and icy cold....!! It is almost November after all...!! We had 2 inches of snow last November (first weel)

OH was speaking to some weather related worker/specialist and they said it was due to this that and the other but we were going to get shed loads of snow again this year.

Methinks sometimes the met office has to cover its backside due to its weather cock ups over the years.

Its too weird a terrained country to be accurate and it can be sunny on the weather chart and peeing down at mine but I live in a big range of hills.

Fingers crossed it wont be too bad but what will be will be.

Wont do any harm to stock up a few extras. Our tractor got snowed in last year too.

I think I would prefer to be prepared. It's not as though the hay will go off and be wasted or anything if you didn't use it straight away!!!!

Peace of mind and all that!

The bad winters are down to the solar pressure being very low for the past couple of years and will carry on being low for a while..

Thinking I'm definitely going to get it all in - have two empty stables in the front field that are never used - so no excuse for no storage! Slightly worrying year before last, even our farmer struggled with the tractor and the snow-plough attachment thingy, it had drifted so deep I honestly think even he got worried! He obviously had to feed his sheep, a lot of which tend to hang about down our end. I'm also thinking that I need to stock up on some tinned items! You can't go wrong with plenty of tinned soup, curry, chilli and baked beans!!!

AS long as nobody dies I don't care, My dad died in the hight of the bad weather a couple of years ago. Took 2.5 hours for the Ambulance to get here, took even longer for the Doc.......and the undertaker nearly didn't make it.

Mind you they were glad of the weight in the back on the way back to Lerwick....so I told them to hang on to the old bugger until the snow melted if it made the hearse handle better!:redface:
