My horse is 16hh and weighs 515kg, shes an IDxTB, is that weight ok? how much weight can she carry? I know theres a formula for this but cant fidn it!

The formula i use is,

Convert horses weight into lbs. kgs>lbs = weight in kgs x 2.2

then the weight in pounds(lbs) divided by 6 then divided by 14. This equals how much a horse can carry inc tack

She looks okay weight wise to me, can you feel her ribs easily? She doesnt look like she has any fats pads?......

Thanks, she can carry about 13.4 stone, not as much as I thought lol. no she doesnt have any fat pads, just no muscle, ribs can be felt but not seen.

That's nothing.

I've ridden an Irish Draft X TB and I weighed a lot more than that. She didn't notice me up there and was somewhat lively!

My 14.3hh welsh cob carries me fine at 16st although my bum is too big for the saddle at that weight. Her weight varies through out the year.

I've been looking into riding holidays in Iceland where you spend 7 hours a day riding. Their average size is 13.3hh and the maximum weight of rider is 110kg which is about 17st

I'm not a fan of these formulars for weight carrying ability. I prefer just to see how it goes but build up to weight rather than bunging on a big weight and needed to reduce..

Thanks, yeah suppose its a bit like the human BMI charts! she certainly is spritely when I ride her so dont think she struggles with me- we like to whizz round the arena!

Usual calculation is 20% of horse weight so she could carry 103 Kg. (around 16st.)
Obviously fitness and conformation and workload all affect this and tack needs including in the weight.

BTW she looks lovely.
