Hunting attire

crazyhorse97

nervous nellie...
just wondering really, what ARE you supposed to wear when hunting??

are synthetic chaps OK?
Do you have to wear a velvet (colour?)?
Do you have to have a 'normal' saddlepad?
is a tweed jacket ok?
Can you have more than one ribbon in a horses tail? (ie red AND green? if not which would be more important in your eyes? if the hoss isn't likely to kick just hasnt been hunting or seen that many hosses or dogs before)

Can you tell i know noooothing!!! :p

i think it depends on the hunt, some aren't as strict as others.

i don't really know *much* my bf was going to take me hunting (long story but didnt go in the end) and he said i could wear

cream cord joddies,
my black suede half chaps
old school shirt
old school tie
and his spare hunting jacket

as you can tell i would have looked very sexy......:p

eta: he'd been hunting since he was little, and knows alot about hunting, so apparently i would have been acceptable in that :p

I wouldnt worry tooooo much as its your first time :D

Im 20 havent hunted since last season but as im a PCer i wear my pc tie and my hacking jacket if over 18 and not PC then Black is correct..... really must get a black jacket soon as im bit too old now ;) I personally wear a jockey skull for safety reasons.

Any saddlecloth is fine tho id say stick with black or brown denpendant on your tack colour :)

Im sure chaps are fine :D

As its horses first time id go green not both..... green people will understand first timer and will hopefully keep out of your way if poss :)

have fun!!!

Depends on the hunt but for the big formal ones:

Pony club members tweed jacket jods/boots and Pony Club Tie

Others at this time of the season, navy or black jacket, stock, long boots or leather gaiters, discrete tack (ie natural colours not pink!)

Some are much less formal, look for a website or phone the secretary for local customs, wax jackets etc are accepted on wet days in a lot of fields.

I personally wouldn't take a horse hunting a this time of year if you think he may kick, wait to go out with a quieter Autumn hunt which is where people take their newcomers/babies

I am desperate to go hunting locally with Rosie - not hunted since I was at school but looking in horse and hound - some people dont even wear proper hats. I dont normally wear a BP but would probably do to take her hunting cos she will get beside herself with excitement! Does anyone wear a BP for hunting or do I chance it to look the part?

Would be the local childrens hunt for under 20's (or those that look it and want to hunt! ) would this be better or worse?? *so confuzzled*

and Kat1 i wouldnt dare go without!!!!!!

Really depends on the hunt; mine was pretty smart for hunting proper a woman had to wear black or dark blue jacket, black or d/blue hat (Skull with cover acceptable), white jods, black boots and/or 1/2 chaps. Horse had to be in black or brown tack with no coloured browbands or numnahs etc.

My first hunt in Wales was completly different and the local farmers would hunt in wellies and wax jackets and tweed caps:p

Deffinitly ask the secretary.
