Hi, I am 16 years old, I have never had a horse, but I want one, I am 5'4" and WAY OVER WEIGHT, Id like to learn as much as I can and lose alot of weight before I get my first horse. I need to know all I can, like Tack, Health, Training, how tall and heavy a horse I should have, everything you know I want to know. Thank you for your Kindness and Consideration.

One of the best ways to learn is to go and volunteer somewhere. Get plenty of hands on experience at the mucky end of a horse Mucking out , handling on the ground and you will just soak up knowledge. It's also a great way to get you outside and burning calories.

It's a good place to start and a great way to motivate yourself to being able to get up top and ride.

Yes learn lots and maybes volunteer somewhere where you can learn the practical stuff too . As for horses at your height you could ride anything from 13.2hh fell ponies that can carry up to about 17 stone or larger heavy draught horses, just cause your overweight it doesn't mean you can't ride or work towards riding. There are horses/ponies out there to suit most builds, you will find been around horses therapeutic and no doubt it will help you on your weight loss journey :-)

I would also recommend volunteering ;) it's such a great experience to be around them, mucking, cleaning, grooming etc.. You can also get the occasional ride too :D I'd easily say just simply watching the horses in the field is therapeutic, and riding is the perfect sport to help you with your weight loss journey :) I'm still quite new here, but I'll try help ask any questions you have

Hi and welcome :D

Another vote for finding somewhere to volunteer. I helped at a local riding school when I was at school and then at a local riding for the disabled group. Not only will you learn lots and get hands on experience you'll also meet lots of like minded people and make new friends :)

Contact your loacl riding club or show center. They are always after people to help out at shows (pole picking, stewarding etc.) and simply watching other people riding is a great way to learn. When I was your aged I practically lived at my local riding school and learnt so much there.

As far as weight loss goes, get yourself a fitbit. Walking at least 20,000 steps per day has been a great weight loss tool for me.
