ive jsut sepnt best part of an hour picking rose hips for the horses, im such a pushover, lol

the new 'posh bird' thoroughbred thought i was trying to poison her when i gave her the first one, then chewed, looked intrigued and told me to pick more at once! and was stood waiting behind me, to have them passed to her

shes never been in a field with hedges before, always neat post and rail etc, and thought food only comes in buckets :D

mine are just wild hedge ones, although the horses ate a lot of the actual rose flowers so there arent as many hips as there could be :)

oh yes, only one of mine doesnt eat them, but shes picky with everything

here are some of the health benefits ive just googled

Rosehips Granules are one of the very best sources of natural Iron and Vitamin C. They also contain biotin for optimum hoof health. Rosehips play a major role in kidney rehabilitation and adrenal function and can be used to prevent Azoturia or "tying up".

Routine usage will completely rehabilitate kidneys weakened by stress and/or the regular use of electrolytes or diuretics.

Rosehips (Rosa canina) The hips (fruit) of the dog rose are a source of readily assimilated forms of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, including – vitamins C, A, B1, B2, B3 and K, bioflavonoids (including rutin), carotenoids, tannins, calcium, magnesium, silica, phosphorous and copper.

As well as being considered a herb dietary supplement, rosehips are often fed to horses recuperating from illness or injury as they help to restore the immune system and aid tissue repair. Feeding Rosehips as part of the daily diet is beneficial for preventing illness.

The vitamin C in rosehips acts as a natural antihistamine, which can assist the allergy-prone horse. Bioflavonoids, as well as having potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, enhance vitamin C’s ability to strengthen blood vessel walls, and this effect contributes to rosehips’ reputation for encouraging healthy hoof growth. Rosehips can also help alleviate gastric inflammation and diarrhoea.

Actions include:

Rosehip Herbal dietary supplement for horses and livestock, astringent (having a contracting and toning effect on mucous membranes and tissues), aperient (mildly laxative – promoting natural bowel function), anti-diarrhoeal.
