Sparko has had a hogged mane for 3-4 years now and im thinking of letting it grow.....

Has anyone had a horse with a hogged mane and let it grow back??
im wondering how it will grow and roughtly how long???

Any tips peeps??? :D

Thanks

My horse had a hogged mane years ago and it took her a good year for it to grow back properly. Expect the spikey look for a while!!

Mine was hogged at the base where the saddle meets when i brought him. I have let it go since I've had him which is a year now and it is now 7-8 inchs long. The rest of his mane is about 20 plus inchs.

Thanks everyone, im going to try real hard and resist the urge to hogg it when it becomes spikey!!

Will it grow back normal, i suppose it will require extra training as it will be wild and bushy???

He has a med to thin thickness so it shouldnt be to bad!!

can someone email a pic of a grown hogged mane?

Some on my yard say once hogged its ruined????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Load of cr@p ;)

My cob was hogged about 2 years ago and his mane grew out just fine and he has a lovely long thick mane :)

Taken back in the summer after he had a bath, his mane is NOT normally this white !! lol

Yeah, I have met several horses whose hogs grew out and they had a nicer mane afterwards than they did before it was done. As for how quickly it will grow out - I think it depends on the horse, since they're hair growth rate is as wildly different amongst horses as it is amongst humans.
But why do you want to let it grow out now anyway? I love a hogged mane on a suitable horse, but I know many people who hate them.

Alex's grows enough to lie in about 6 months, but probs a year - 2 for some length. And its always livley and thick when it does

aww your horse is stunning!!

Both my horses are hogged, i do like a hogged horse to but im thinking my chestnut sparko should now have a mane?

This is sparko when i first bought him, he has matured more now, he was a bit of an ugly duckling lol

Maybe some computer whiz could but a mane on that picture????

So whats everyones thouhts "to hog or not to hog"?

Totally off topic, but where did you get that bridle for your chestnut ? And how much ? :p

With regards to the whole hogged vs natural, I think that's a purely a personal thing.

I personally dont like hogged and clipped out cobs, but that's just my opinion, I dont have a need to clip my boy, he lives out and I dont show him at all. (His old owner did though and that's why he was clipped out and hogged)

Nelsons wasn't hogged but was pulled very short in april time (about 2 inch long...got a bit happy with the thinning scissors ) and now its probably about 7/8 inch long, possibly a tad more!! He does have super hair and hoof growth though

ETA - dont they hog spanish horses manes for 1st couple of year so they get a good thick mane growth when they are older ??

Jimmys is growing out. We have about 3 inches since September. I call it the "Bog Brush" stage. :p

I think that a mane will soften your chaps face. Really suited him in that first pic. But then I have to confess I am not a hogged mane fan. :o

I'll have a go at maning him, but no promises :D

ETA: How he could look on a windy day XD

Hi i got the bridle from my local tack shop its made by IV Horse i think and it was £50+ im assuming its a endurance bridle but ive never been able to find anymore as my horse is extremely head shy and cannot have a brow band so it was perfect as it all clips together, but not sure on the colour purple lol :D

THATS BRILLIANT, AND HIS FACE SEEMS TO SAY IT ALL!!!

I think im going to give it go at growning out!!! :p

Im just not looking forward to the mohalk stage he will look even more front heavy and chunky!!!

mine religiously hogs her own mane, despite my best efforts, every spring/summer when she scratches it off, by the next spring/summer it's usually back again... as a thought it seems to come back thick every time... maybe i ought to just hog it whn warm weather comes to save her the effort :)
