INFO on hogged manes?!!

Nelsons wasn't hogged but was pulled very short in april time (about 2 inch long...got a bit happy with the thinning scissors ) and now its probably about 7/8 inch long, possibly a tad more!! He does have super hair and hoof growth though

ETA - dont they hog spanish horses manes for 1st couple of year so they get a good thick mane growth when they are older ??

spanish horses do have their mane hogged until they start ridden work - it makes their manes more manageable when they are young -then the preening starts when the work starts ;)

ETA: my friend hogs her horse's mane yearly (because of sweetitch) and its always just starting to look really nice (IMO) just before she hogs it again

at the RS i used to go to there was a HW mare (prob shire x or similar) who was always hogged and i was told they couldn't let it grow out as it would not look right... then they let it grow and it was fabulous :p

If it's hogged and you want to see the difference, go for it. I've read on other forums that MTG is a wonderful product to assist in mane and tail growth. Don't forget that diet is another factor in healthy, beautiful skin/hair. I'm waiting to see how long my Percheron's mane will grow, as when I got her it was about 6" shorter (this was in JULY) than it is now, and it's SO thick, and lays over both sides of her neck. She's had nothing put on it other than Laser Sheen (recent), and only minimal supplementation...I also try not to OVER groom it.
Here are pics of the change....

And that's not even current anymore. ;)

I hogged my ponies mane a few years ago and it took about 5 months for it to get out of that mohawk look. I loved it all spiked up, and it looked so much better after growing out than before it was hogged.

When it gets long enough, plait it over to the required side and keep redoing it daily until it lies flat by itself. One of my ponies was hogged, I grew it out and his old owner was amazed by how much nicer it was when it grew back than it originally was
