I have cancelled Robins insurance. However I need 3rd party minimum. I would also like the external injury only cover. I am looking at harry hall. I think I need gold membership which adds the 3rd party and then add on the external injury cover.

Are there other external injury only type companies. I could get bhs gold membership to get the 3rd party which I have done before.

This is going on the hope he will now be retired. I see little point on paying out £96 per month for full vet fees when not a lot is now covered.

Be very careful with Harry Hall, read the small print thoroughly because I've heard of people being caught out with it.

Realistically, and this isn't meant to sound brutal so please don't get upset, but if he had a bad external injury would it be in his best interests to treat? And a less serious injury probably wouldn't cost more than the premium and excess to treat. Just a thought.

I'd probably stick with third party and keep putting a bit aside for any vets fees.

There’s a few doing external injury cover now, some call it catastrophic injury cover. I looked into it, but reading the fine print it didn’t cover a lot so I decided against it, it’s definitely worth looking carefully at.

Thanks

Carthorse no I’m not upset at all. And no he wouldn’t be put through much. I was thinking if say he came in with a wound that needed minor treatment and abx. Or like when he stood on his shoe in the sole. I think the yearly fee is only slightly more than the monthly. Call out alone is £65. I’m actually struggling to find anything about excess which is not great.

Catastrophic was the a word I was trying to remember and harry hall was the only company I could remember. Thanks 😊

So harry hall and whw excess is £165

Harry hall membership £65 + £91 vet fees
Whw membership £65 and vet fees total £160

Bhs gold membership is £90

I think….

I have experience with this and was caught out by injury only cover. It will only treat actual wounds so If he did a tendon or was kicked and damaged something but there was no open wound then you aren’t covered. That’s happened to me when I thought Kia had been kicked in the jaw, they wouldn’t cover as he had no cuts only a lot of swelling round his jaw area hence the thought he’d been kicked.

I just put £50 in an act every month and paid for BHS gold which I still have. When Kia needed treatment I told the vet what the budget they had was and it was amazing what they could do with it.

I feel for you as I’ve been there. Hope everything turns out ok for you x

I don't like the sound of the open wound policies if I am honest. How many things can a horse damage or injure that's not actually an open wound.
If they suffer a major injury to be described as catastrophic, I would likely need to look at the quality of life and not just the injury itself. If it's bad enough to need to claim, it suggests it's bad.

Apologies for a thick question. Are you referring to retirement from competition?
I know you said you've canceled the insurance, but if you had loss of use with that policy, you might be able to claim on that if the vet says he cannot be rehabilitated to compete.

So sorry to read it's come to this, but he's lucky to have such a caring owner. I have Harry Hall 3rd party for my boy who is retired. Once reading the small print and excess amounts for the external injury policies I also decided against it.

No I am meaning retirement in total. That is best case just now. He dosnt have loss of use and they wouldn’t pay out anyway even if he did (pre existing condition)

We have BHS Gold, an “emergency only” credit card, and pay a monthly sum (of an equivalent amount to an insurance premium) into an interest paying account. This has been sufficient for all our horses, ponies, dogs and cats for over 20 years, including surgery and horsepital on occasions.

Sorry Doodle. Horses are heartbreakers.

A lot of the major companies are doing something of the same thing now. KBIS have launched one, and whilst ive not read the fineprint they have been great to deal with on other things.

Sorry to read this.
What's he done?

This is Doodle92 thread about the situation

I’m sorry to hear things are not good. Don’t give up hope just yet though, things might not be as bad as they seem and time can be a great healer.

The hock is why Billy is retired. In 4 years weve gone from minor, barely detectable lame, to chronic lame. He stops himself dead if he tries to trot, yet he can manage a few canters and bucks.
Ive kept up with his full insurance still, lord knows why in a way. I was going to drop it last year but in the end didnt. His hock is the only think ive ever claimed for on him, but hes quirky and i could just see the minute i drop his insure he will do himself a mischief you can be sure. As his hock is so bad though i will only undergo small issues. Too be honest he will be a difficult patient to treat and as ive already been inflicted two quite severe injuries from him in the past i wont risk myself just to keep him alive.

I know everyone is being kind and supportive and I really appreciate that. I can’t let myself go in to details just now. I am more hopeful by the day and I will update when I next talk to the vet 😊
