Irish Sports Horses...

Hi guys.

Some of you will be aware that i have recently bought an Irish Sports Horse.

I just wondered if anyone here knew what the typical make up or guidelines for an Irish Sports Horse are, i.e. does 2/8 of the characteristics come from ID or TB for example, with the remainder coming from the other.

Reason i ask is because to me, Basil looks a lot more TB than he does ID.

Long, thin(ish) neck, long legs, etc...

I would say his face is more ID than TB but he does seem more towards the TB side of things.

Thanks.

Gaz.

I dont know all the rules about it but I think (could be wrong!) that there is a list of stallions registered with the irish horse whatever it is and if your horse is sired by a registered stallion it becomes an irish sports horse. I found out what i know when I looked up the Irish Horse Register online.

Sorry that prob wont make sense! But my horse is very similar to your's - he is registered as an irish sports horse, and he looks mostly TB.

How old is Basil and what height? he looks lovely :)

honey is registered as an irish sports horse with the irish horse register - and she is a chunky monkey with no registered parentage! so not too sure what consitutes as a ISH!
not sure if that helps at all but just goes to show that it does not have to mean IDxTB with know parentage to get that as a breed type on a passport.

ETA he looks like my first horse who was 1/8 ID 7/8 TB - but you'd swear he was just a traditional type TB

Yep just had a look at the website and you can register a horse as an irish sport horse with no pedigree so basically anything can be an irish sport horse!

the have different passport colours

no breeding equals white passport.
partial breeding blue passport.
and full breeding green passport.

OK - i am really thick about passports as this is the first horse i have bought since you have needed them.... :o
but when you say colours - is it literally?! as in the cover/paper colour?
i have a blue coloured passport for honey - but she has no breeding
i'm confused!
(this question will prob be posted in the 'daft questions..' thread now!:p)

And I have a white one for Phoenix - even though It says who his parents are
- I thought you could only get a blue or green one if they were blood tested to prove the parents? Its all so confusing

Polly's got a green one so I guess that means she had her parentage verified? Weird...I thought they were all green 'cause they're Irish!! :o

yes the outside cover of the passport is coloured white, blue or green. They have to be parentage tested and the parents have to be registered ISH to get a green passport. Posie your blue passport is strange and very out of the norm if your mare have no known breeding. Is it definately an irish sport horse passport or is it just stamped by them?

oooh - i'm not sure now! i'll have a look tonight....
her breed is down as ISH for sure....
maybe it's an irish horse register passport and not a irish sports horse passport... is that different?!
maybe they just put the wrong colour cover on?! :D

Blood tested and the parents have to be registered with the same society. i.e if sire is tb then he must also be registered with the IHB to be included on the passport as parentage tested.

how very odd then!!
i bet they just put the wrong cover on ;)
i'm sending it off to register me as the owner anyway so maybe they'll put a new cover on for me!
unless she has parentage and it's just not written on it... could that be the case?!
on her vet report/identity bit it says parentage unknown.....
but she does have a registered number....
it's prob a fake! tehehehe

ETA - sorry for the million and 1 questions - thanks for answering them!

sounds like a wrong cover, the sire, dam and dam sire should all be listed to get a "coloured" passport. or at least on one side of the family. unless her passport was lost and a replacement bought which would mean getting her blood tested again.

He looks the exact same as my fella, (sorry no pics, not very literate i`m afraid - working on it :) He`s also ISH, sire is Ardcroney Lad vII, dam is Kilfearagh Clover, they`re great horses to own:):)
