Is there anyone with EDS on here??

I have Hypermobile EDS (or EDS III) as well. There's a few of us on here who suffer with it, and I seem to recall quite a long thread with ideas and modifications that some of us have made to make riding and caring for our horses easier.
I think it was titled "Riders with Hypermobility Syndrome"... :confused:

My 22 year old daughter has E.D.S. She has had her right ankle fused, and uses flexi irons, which gives her a bit more bend in her ankle. Her consultant has said it is the best for of exercise for her.We are looking for a safe pony/horse to buy. [one that doesn't pull, as this will dislocate her shoulders] If anyone knows of a safe sensible animal please get in touch.
My daughter would be happy to get in touch with you to discuss any issues about riding/E.D.S

You wouldn't by any chance live in Scotland do you? Sorry to ask a silly question but someone at the yard I keep my pony at was talking about a girl with hypermobility who had had an accident trying out a pony- I think they had been coming to see a haffy at the yard?

Sorry if it's not you :o (Promise I am not strange just thinking that the world seems rather small!)
 
Hi, yes we live in Fife, my daughter had a bad fall from a 'safe,haffy' that never would put a foot wrong when out hacking, This 'safe' haffy took of with her 3 times, before bolting. Anyway daughter came off . Suffered 2 broken ribs and concussion. Didn't buy 'safe' haffy. Have now just purchased a beautiful 15.hh fresian/welsh mare.
 
Hi Buff Girl, My daughter has had capsular shift operatoions done on both shoulders, but ops did not work, Shoulders are dislocated all the time. Grooming the ponies gives her better physio than any that she has had from hospital. She has splints that she wears when her wrists are bad. Have you been to see Prof Bird in Leeds?

Your lucky! I dont have a joint in me that isnt out at least three times a day other then my left elbow oddly enough!

I ride with EDS everyday. It was horses that kept me out of a wheelchair infact.

I started working with them and now i own one. The riding helped my knees, hips and ankles whilst the lifting work (throwing the muck heap and cleaning) has helped my shoulders. As for your hands, there isnt much to do there but me carefull and know your limits. NEVER get on a horse that is bolshy or tempermental and no matter what people say, ride with a body brace as if you have the same type as me, it will save your organs when you come off.

If you want to talk for more advice on EDS both in life and in riding message me. I've had it all my life, im well adapted!

I havnt seen prof bird in leeds but i have seen prof greame in London.
If i cant ride because of various things i still always muck out and groom.
The doctors i saw i bristol were shocked because they had tried telling me to stop riding but i ignored them and it built up my muscles and made me stronger.
