Out for a coffee the other day with friend and I start pouring in the Splenda - I have an extremely sweet tooth and will usually have about 10 cups of tea a day with 3 sweeteners each time.
Friend told me about an article recently published regarding the effects of artificial sweeteners on joints etc.
I have recently been to the doctors about my hip pain, which has become almost unbearable, and am to go for an xray (when I get time:redface:)
Well to cut a long story short I stopped taking the sweeteners and
IN LESS THAN ONE WEEK
I can run up and down the stairs again, I rode for nearly 4 hours the other day without having to get off once (last week I had said to buddy 1 hour is all I can manage )
I thought I was just getting old but I can honestly say I am feeling on top of the moon, not only has all pain gone but my tiredness has gone too!!!!
If I went for a long hack I would have to give myself a day or two before attempting another.
I also used to be in immense pain when I got out of bed, my ankles knees and hips practically seized up.
Amazed at how these sweeteners had affected me, apparently they are banned in other countries.
I'm 54 and not 'old' anymore...... Whoopie :dance:

Yes it is suprising. I am glad you have found a cause that can now be rectified.

Up until last year I took anitdrepressants, I had constant aches and pains. Now I don't take them I feel 99% less achey and much more mobile.

I have also lost tons of weight, which may be a contributing factor.

I'm very interested in learning more. Can you put a link to what type of sweeteners this study related to.

So glad you found your answer x

Just about to read the links but wanted to reply first, glad you feel better for it! Just reading with interest as I have joint probs and also use a lot of sweetener (I have type 1 diabetes and a sweet tooth!) and never thought that it would have an effect on my hips. Will be giving that a try, thanks for the information :)

How strange ! I've had more hip trouble myself over the last few weeks riding (which I brushed off thinking it was because of me riding and have changed my stirrups) but I've had an increased intake if sweetner over the last month. I wonder if mine is linked.

Does that mean diet coke etc too? I have kicked the habit but noticed no effect on joints.

Did you know aspartame can also give the same symptoms as MS? Jack in the diet coke as well if you drink it anyone, no really do, it's not better for you than 'full fat' coke at all.
http://rense.com/general10/term.htm Edited to add, when you put 'Aspartame poisoning' into the search engine, it shows this dates back to about 2008/9 and scientists are trying to disclaim the findings, and say it's a hoax. If this is the case, why are people who are cutting it out of their diet, feeling better?
I stopped sugar in my tea/coffee years ago, I don't feel the need for sweetness in my brew, can't stand the stuff, as it coats my teeth.. It does take time to get used to sugar or sweetness not being there.

On my phone so haven't checked links but there is a brilliant one on diet coke and supposed ms sufferers, well worth a read.

I have a bad diet coke habit. Always wondered why the can and some drinks say "Contains Aspartine".

Haven't found or looked for the article but friend told me there was a lady who got up and walked after being wheelchair bound following her giving up sweeteners.
Ruski give it a go, you've got nothing to lose, the results for me started to show after a couple of days

I can't have Aspartame, I don't know if it would affect my joints but it plays havoc with my guts. I found this out years ago when it first came out and I have avoided all sweeteners since then. I think the whole sugar free thing is Yuk.

That is so weird about them causing you to have joint pain like that! Glad you are back to normal now! I can't have sweeteners because they make my palpitations worse, I have to be very careful about most additives in food and drinks for that reason.

Pub lunch today after riding lesson away from home and I had diet coke (yes, I know)
But thinking what else I should have ordered, most of the lime and cranberry juices and squashes these days have sweeteners in and I cant drink Orange juice - suggestions please.

I drink Schloer, tomato juice or lime juice and soda if I don't want anything alcoholic. Or just plain soda water with a slice of lemon. I don't think all brands of lime juice have sweeteners in - I avoid them because I hate the taste.

This is certainly worth reading:

I cannot take any low calorie artificially sweetened products without getting headache and flu like sore joints symptoms. For soft drinks/mixers at home I mix sparkling spring water with a good quality additive free cordial ( I like Bottle Green ginger and lemongrass particularly) In a pub situation if driving I either have a 'full fat' coke or a mineral water!

eml, I do the same at home. Mix fizzy water with ginger or elderflower.
But some years back when I told my GP I was addicted to diet coke she said to me, Switch to the decafinated. If that still satisfied you, then it isnt an addiction.
The message to me was that one could be addicted to caffeine but not to the other ingredients.

Yes that's another one. Trouble is, most drinks have some artificial colours/flavours and sweeteners.. I'm a big fan of fruit juice, pineapple, orange, and coconut.. I drink about a 3/4 of a litre 5 days a week at work instead of coffee and tea.
Think i'll be checking the label in future.. and to think, i'm trying to be healthy..
