After a conversation between a few of us at work about striding out distances between jumps I'm now very confused

When jumping a double how many human strides do you put in between the fences?

For a bounce?
One horse stride?
Two horse strides?

And how big are your human strides? May seem a silly question but we debated this too :frown:

I was always taught four of my strides = one pony stride, and 2 extra strides before jump and after for landing and take off

Average canter stride for a horse is 12ft. Average human stride (stepping out, not dawdling!) is 3ft. Hence you need to count 4 of your strides for each canter stride.

However with a double, you need to count for the number of canter strides PLUS adding half a stride (6ft) for landing after the first jump and another for the takeoff for the second jump.

Bounce is 12ft. No canter strides, but allowing 6ft for landing and 6ft for takeoff. That is 4 human strides.

1-stride double is 24ft. One canter stride (12ft), plus 6ft for landing and 6ft for takeoff. That is 8 human strides.

2-stride double is 36ft. Two canter strides (24ft) plus 6ft for landing and 6ft for takeoff. That is 12 human strides.

This is exactly what I said!!

So one stride double 2 persons strides for landing, 4 in between, 2 for take off = 8.

Not 16 like my friend thought!! :frown:
Apparently she said 4 for takeoff or landing. She strided it out and I said "seriously, your horse takes off that far away from the jump?!?" I know I'm used to ponies but that's a mega jump!! :bounce:

Thanks for putting me straight as I was starting to doubt myself
