My back person who came out today said that if you leave a horses headcollar on in the field then they have a dent in the bone on their nose!!
I feel really bad because I left my horses headcollars on but I have took them off now.
It leaves a dent which can be quite painful at first.
(in response to my other thread 'MAJOR FOR YOUR HORSES WELLFAIR' this was what I meant.Sorry if I gave the wrong impression:o :o didn't mean it like that!:o :o :o )

Eh, I question that. I wear a bra, and the straps don't leave dents in my shoulders. Now, I have seen damage done to horses from halters that were left on for weeks on end, especially as the horse was still growing, but not from just leaving a halter on during the day in the field.

No I meant if you left the headcollar on all day and all night!
I did but now I have taken them off permanently.
If you saw it and felt it you would know what I mean!!
When ponies_r_gr8!!!(natalie)comes round on sunday I will see what she thinks!

I've never heard of that before! I know they can do damage if left on when they're turned out and catch / get stuck on something tho.

my bra straps dig in and leave dents so i can believe what you're saying

eta and when i wear specs, the constant pressure behind my ears isn't noticable as it's so slight, until i take them off-and then it feels like heaven when that pressure is gone

I leave mine on day & night... I'm going to have to check them out... but I imagine if they're not too tight and have room to chew... there shouldn't be a problem...

But I have to admit one of my mares has a mark on her nose, where her old head collar was ... but the bottom part was made out of chain... so that's 10 times more harsh... I took it of as soon as I got her home... poor thing even had a sore under her chin... :(

Anything like that left on permanently can cause permanent damage. Wearing callipers left my OH with permanent 'dents' in places on his legs, even though at teh time they didn't actually cause sores.

But by far the biggest risk in leaving headcollars on in the field is the risk of the horse getting caught... even in the most apparently safe field, there will be places a headcollar can get caught - gate handles, hedges... horses have been known to get their own feet caught in them.

Field safe headcollars drastically reduce that risk, but never ever turn out in an ordinary headcollar (not even cheap imported leather ones in the belief they'll break - I know from horrible personal experience they often don't).

Ive seen horses with headcollar dents and tether dents. We dont ever turn out in headcollars - one horse I know has partial face paralysis from getting caught up in a headcollar and cutting her face up, and being stuck overnight.

I remember seeing an animal rescue programme once where a horse had a headcollar put on as a youngster, then was forgotten about (I mean, for years) and it grew too big for the headcollar. It's face had a huge dent (inch or two deep) in it where the noseband had cut in, and the headcollar had to be surgically removed from behind it's ears. When they pulled the strap out it was writhing with maggots. That was enough to make me never turn out in a headcollar again!!
For those concerned, the horse found a lovely new home with a nice lady and was absolutely fine except for the dents and scars left by the headcollar - the end credits showed it fat and happy running round playing with another horse.

I never turn my horse out with a headcollar on, in fact she doesn't even wear a headcollar much - but she has a small dent on her nose which is harder than the rest of her nose. Just from nosebands always being in the same place I suppose.

Another vote for not turning out in headcollars, horses are so sensitive to touch it must be irritating, particularly if the nose band is too low and interferes with breathing. But, then, I hate seeing dogs permanently wearing collars too.

sorry to borrow thread but...

have been fretting about this very subject recently...

A non-horsey friend has 2 ponies kept in a field next door to her. They have snug headcollars on 24/7 (live out). One seems rather spindly & young - I guess it's mother & daughter. Never seen used in work / out of field. General set-up seems okay - 3 sides of high hedges as shelter, hay in huge buckets, good area grazing, considering they look like hairy natives to me.

BUT the bigger friendly one has nuzzled over the gate to me several times - and the noseband has worn away a ridge of fur across the front of the nose. I adjusted it a bit but it slips back into the furrow. The skin is intact and it is hairless rather than visibly sore. But I don't like it. Can't reach to check little one. Have checked behind ears and seems fine there.

I guess they're hard to catch and are done up tight so they can't snag the collars on anything (in theory).

How much / how should I intervene? Am I being picky / idealistic? There a mobile number on the gate because the owner lives somewhere else & visits.

My back person who came out today said have a dent in the bone on their nose!!

theres two ponies kind of near to me, i have loosened both there head collars as they both were so tight they could barely chew, this is after id loosened them:
