Keeping in after worming?

I have inadvertently upset my field sharers by worming and turning back out again. They say the wormer will make the horse shed eggs/worms and horses need to be in for 24 hours after worming.

As far as I knew, if a horse has worms, it sheds eggs all the time anyway?? So wormer is to stay on top of the burden? And poo picking/harrowing is to keep the burden in the field low.

I use egg counts year round plus a wormer for encysted redworm in Winter and tapeworm in Spring. I've never heard that I should keep them in after worming before. What do others do?

The only time I have wormed and kept in for 24-48hrs was when Stumpy first moved on livery when I first had her.

I thought the majority of yards worm all horses at the same time?

Our's are being done for tape worm this week, and those with a high egg count are being treated for across the spectrum - they're staying in all day friday (I think) and sat, then out in new field

Usually they do, but there are a few yards that don't.. in an ideal world all liveries should co-operate with others, so every horse gets the correct dose, done at the same time and out the next day (24 hours after worming)..
All worms and eggs that come out after that should be dead, and cause no more harm to the horses.. but you can always worm count before and after to make sure the count has dropped if your not sure (doesn't cost much to have one done)

We do. All horses in my field were wormed Saturday. That's how they knew mine was out when she 'should' have been in. Oops.

48-72 hours in after every worming? What about horses that live out, grass liveries etc? She did have a zero egg count last time I checked though. So I think she's fine....

The main reason on my old yard the horses were wormed sat, and kept in until Monday, was to weedle out those who forgot, not that they weren't given plenty of notice (usually 2 weeks)

Nope never kept my horses in ever. We have individual fields and no real worm program at the yard. I worm count and worm according to session plus poo pick twice a day.

We never keep any in after worming as we don't have enough stables. Ours are left out...never hurt them... In winter I poo pick but in summer it's chain harrowed.

Ours have to be in - but YO buys the wormers, dishes them out to everyone and all stay in - generally over a weekend so at least they can be exercised.

But we don't poo pick!

The main reason for keeping in is the adverse affect of wormers on the enviroment, I think

We don't keep our horses in after worming, never have as the whole point of worming is to kill the worms and eggs. If you see any live worms in poo they can't survive as the wormers affect their mouths so they die anyway. Because of the potential risk to birds, beetles etc from any residual wormer we always make sure we religiously poo pick three times a day the next couple of days after worming.
