Hi all. Can I ask you all who feed magnesium where you buy it from? Just interested in the most cost effective/best way of doing it. Have been buying mine off ebay but I do seem to be feeding quite a bit (4g per 100 kg of boadyweight = nearly 20g a day for us) however I notice Equine of America's Magnitude is only 5 g a day and £15.99's worth lasts 6 months? I assume the latter is a more condensed product? Sounds pretty good. Many thanks!

Equine america's magnitude is very good :) i bought a tub of it but have been buying off ebay as well to see if theres much difference in price etc, the mag ox i bought from ebay (sounds like the one you buy) i didn't like much, very powdery and the volume to feed was quite a lot. i feed cal-mag at the moment also bought from ebay. it also says 4g per 100g bodyweight but seems to weigh more so the volume used is less if that makes sense.

the equine america one is good though and lasts for ages

I buy mag ox off ebay, but I don't give as much as they say you're supposed to - it's ridiculously light and the recommended amount would be more than their dinner . I just use a small scoop from another supplement, but have to say it seems to be working :)

Thanks all, very interesting. Will look at those sites you've recommended, cheers Donkey Heaven. I have cut down to a heaped teaspoon, particularly has ponio doesn't much care for mg at the best of times! Have to say though her feet have really come on since I've been feeding it ..... Cheers all.

If you use the same seller on ebay that I do then I asked her a question at the begining of this year and this was the reply I got from her.

It think it contains some info that would be really useful to you in your quest :)

CalMag is the unpure form of magnesium oxide. It is much grittier in texure and it is about 52% magnesium oxide. It is therefore a lot cheaper and less volume is needed as it is much denser than the magnesium oxide. Although the recommended amounts are the same for calmag and magnesium oxide (4g per 100kg), some people find they need to feed more calmag to get the required effects.

The magnesium oxide I sell is pharmaceutical grade and is 99% pure. As it is a fine powder, it is more easily absorbed than the CalMag. There are 2 forms, light and heavy. The heavy is more dense as it has been heated longer in the manufacturing process, so costs a bit more. This means that although you need the same weight of light or heavy, less volume is needed of the heavy.

I personally give both my horse magnesium oxide (heavy) (to reduce the risk of laminitis), as it is easily absorbed and they only need 2/3 heaped teaspoons each a day

It really it a matter of choice! Some owners are not keen on the gritty-ness of the calmag, but the horses rarely mind.

the only one my chap will eat is magnafeed, tried the other power type and the cheaper version. (why couldn't he like the cheap one!!)
