Gracie has a tiny patch on the back of her off fore.... about 4" down from her knee. It's about the size of a 5p piece and when I first discovered it a few weeks ago I thought she had an injury. However upon further investigation - and watching for a while - I have come to the conclusion that it is a mild form of mallenders. I have read up and it says that it is caused by feather mites or previous feather mites and as it is such a small patch on only one leg and I have seen no other evidence of mites (no stamping, biting, rubbing or scurf), I am assuming it is the latter. I don't think she is any huge pain because she doesn't mind me touching it and treatment and success seems to vary from horse to horse so I've finally got round to cutting the hair off around it, removing the scabs and slathering on Sudocreme (my cure-all!! :p)..... will see what effect that has for starters. At least it is in a place that doesn't move too much when she walks, like the fold behind her knee. The vet will be back out in a couple of months to give her another flu jab so if it is persisting by then I will have it professionally assessed. Certainly don't think she needs Dectomax injections at this stage.

Its such a pain and never goes away. You can only control it. I use pig oil and sulphur. I've heard good things about detomax but not tried it myself. I am trying some of my noromectin cattle wormer at the moment. Only put one application on so far and no change at present. You have reminded me reading this i need to put some more on.

I thought it was a fictional ailment from James Herriot!

"I've a cure for mallenders and sallenders in hosses! What do you think o' that then!"

Friend has started to use Spot On 2,5ml on the back of each knee monthly. he's had Dectomax and gets regular pig oil and sulphur (weekly) It's looking better than it's looked for ages.

Reading up on HHO it seems that there are many different options but not all things work on all horses. It's a trial and error game. Thank goodness Gracie's seems quite minor. I hope I can keep it that way..... at the very least!

Major has them. Tbh we have tried everything over the years and have given up!

He never seems bothered by them even though they seem quite 'bad' to us. I just leave them be, sometimes I cut the hair short so that the scabby bits are removed, but that's it nowadays.
