I always thought the 'other' name for an arena was Menage, but reading a borrowed Horse & Hound today I noticed lots of references to Maneges!

Googled it and it looks like Manege is correct! So, next question, how do you pronounce it??

My father in law who lives in france is forever correcting me as it is manege but I say menage!! I think it's just the English way of saying it.

Thank you eml, it drives me bonkers that people get it wrong all the time. Exactly. Menage = household hence menage a trois . Manege (which should have an accent grave on the first e) = riding arena.

School is, indeed, easier.

I always think of menage a trois - no more than three people in the school and one of them has to be a bloke.....:bounce::bounce::bounce:

Manège is the correct word. Menage is something else entirely.

Have had this discussion before and a lot of people say "oh it's just the English spelling". No, it isn't, it's not an English word and it doesn't have an English spelling - it's like a restaurant or a cul-de-sac or an abbatoir or a baguette... if you have spelt it differently you have spelt it WRONG

Sorry to add to the confusion :giggle: but here they actually use two different words - a manège is specifically an INDOOR arena, an outdoor arena is a carrière. But a manège is also the name for an entire riding establishment, and for the art of horsemanship itself.

So yeah, being English, why not just say "school" or "arena" and save everyone the trouble of correcting you :giggle:

Well, thanks everyone! You know the problem now is that every time I hear someone call it a Menage it's going to drive me crackers. Plus if I ever call it a Manege my friends are going to look at me funny. Yep I think you're right, much better to call it 'school'!

A manege is a roundabout, ie things going round in circles.

I think menage is so widely used that it just needs to be considered as another example of an import into our language that got corrupted, there are probably lots of others, ancient and modern. Would be interesting to know quite how that happened though.
