Sorry for yet another silly question :o (I'm not very good with feeds!) but what is the difference between general mix and pony nuts?

What are the pro's and cons of each, and how would you what would you feed each for? If you get what I mean :o

Also, any recommendations of a good general supplement?

Thanks :) x

mix is better for the human who is feeding because they think it looks more appetising

nuts stops them sorting through and only eating certain bits out of the feed.

I don't think there is really much of a difference apart from what loopylozza said. I suppose nuts have the advantage of being suitable to soak if you wanted. :)

A good vit supplement is Globalvite from Global Herbs.

Mixes LOOK nicer to us but contain more starch and sugar. I prefer nuts as they are digested easier and are less likely to cause fizzyness. You can mix them with chaff so the horse chews them properly and some horses stuff them on their own and can choke.

Don't think there is much difference between a similar type of nuts and mix, although you need to read the feed values to make sure. Nuts do tend to be a bit cheaper.

I have fed both quite happily although am now using a mix. This is only because I stopped feeding chop so needed a feed where the supplements I feed would 'stick' to the feed itself.

As i recall, from when I was comparing the two (across the same feed, think it was conditioning mix vs conditioning cubs, same brand) it was reccommended to feed more of the mix at each level than the nuts- so 'technically' a bag of nuts will last longer, as you would feed less weight in each feed. But this may have just been the specific bags I was comparing.

yeah nuts are a better all round feed type as each nut contains the same as the next where mix each scoop has a different amount of ingrediants to the next so nuts are much better

I feed both. (Mix in feed, nuts in treat ball)

I don't know why but i just feel guilty feeding him nuts because then hes got nothing to look forward to in his ball, i dont know maybe i'm just weird :p

but yea, he prefers the nuts if that helps :D

I was told by someone the nuts are more processed, broken down and cooked to make a pellet. Therefore you are loosing some of the goodness making the mix a more natural and beneficial food type.
