Myth, Fact Or Fiction

What have you been told about horses that you think is a myth or is there truth in it? I'll start you guys off.

I've heard a saying

"One white sock buy
Two white socks try
Three white socks walk away",

True or not everyone is now counting the socks on their horses!

The other

"Ask a gelding, tell a mare, suggest to a stallion" i think, correct me if this is round the wrong way.

A horse with two whorls on it's face is a fruitcake
Small eyes and small ears walk away.

Chestnut mare-we've all heard this one but i don't why colour would make a difference.

Oh dear :D My homebred 4yo is a chestnut mare with three (sort of) white socks. Not sure one counts as a sock though as it is a white triangle on the front of her right fore and doesn't go all the way round. She's very sane, very intelligent in horse terms, easy to train. She is very quick off the mark but so is her bay mother. I think the chestnut mare bit comes from them being thinner skinned so in general they are more sensitive.

Think it is tell a gelding, ask a mare, discuss it with a stallion.

I've got three mares and used to ride stallions - I actually don't find them much different and would say it is an ask with both. I've also met geldings that need to be asked but generally do find they are more amenable to being told. I prefer the partnership with a mare, once they are onside with you they are incredible to ride and will give you everything.

Fly has a huge whorl on his face that then feathers down at the bottom so guess it is strictly a double whorl and he is the most laid back little person you could wish to meet.

Only dinky ears and small eyes have been in welsh As - and they are universally mischievous!

Loving this thread :D

The one I know is -

One white foot - buy him
Two white feet - try him
Three white feet - doubt him
Four white feet - do without him

Read on here many years ago, somebody said if a horses chestnuts fell off it would die!!! Can't see that being true or my mare would be dead a few times by now!lol. I love picking them off (I know, tis sad but I love the smell of 'em!!!!!!) eeeeek......

*Shudders*

Ewwwww trewsers LOL :giggle:

I was nearly sick when i saw a yard mate pick them off...blurrrrggggh!

Do they smell of cheese?

Why did nobody tell me I should not buy 3 socks???? :giggle:

Who wants Caymen???

Another variation..on the subject of Socks

1 Buy him
2 Try him
3 Suspect him
4 Reject Him

Bit harsh I think - i love 4 white socks (dont love keeping them clean though)!

Four white socks, keep him not a day
Three white socks, send him far away
Two white socks, give him to a friend
One white sock, keep him 'til the end.

Chestnut mares are mad - erm...Yep! ;)

Hmmm, Harvey has four white socks, is chestnut (but a gelding) and has two whorls on his forehead.

Something tells me i should have looked up folklore before trying him lol :bounce:

However he does also have a prophets thumb mark (it's large!) on the side of his neck...it's on his near side. (now waiting to be told that that is the side the devil makes his mark lol)

My first pony was a 2yr old chestnut filly with four white socks....it was very interesting trying to find a livery yard for her!

There is also a saying that if your pony has a single whorl in the middle of their forehead, in line with the eyes then it is honest, trainable and kind....that will be Piccolo then!

However if there are three whorls that form a triangle (two at the top and one in the middle below) on the forehead then it is a difficult horse.

Yep, my chestnut mare is a full on drama queen. So was the other chestnut mare on the yard we used to be on. We used to say, "two half brains together", but in the nicest possible way of course as they were both very intelligent. Too clever for their own good!!

Tell a gelding, ask a mare and discuss it with a stallion.

Tosh :D

My horse has two whorls on his forehead, white around the eyes (never bothered me as my previous clydie had that and was very good) and 4 white - but very strong - feet :D
