Nervous Nellie Thread

My goal was to get him to do a nice small course of jumps on tuesday but as he refused to come in it never happened and i felt quite good about doing it too lol, IF he will come in i am going to go up before work tomorrow and we WILL do some jumping! If that goes according to plan Saturday will either be a hack or schooling, hack if there is anyone to go with as i don't know all the paths yet so might get lost if i go alone:o

Well, I didnt do it!

Had loads of jobs to do and its blowing a gales up here tonight... if OH gets home early... I may still go...:o:D

Good luck to everyone doing something... and please keep posting about whats going on...

Nervous Nelly

Hi I am now a nervous nelly as have fallen off new pony four times in last two months.

She hates push bikes (was not told of this when bought her) and everytime we hack out I am very nervous just in case we see one. I have even started counting how many bikes I see on the road (and there are loads) before I get to the yard. And if there are too many on the road i dont ride.

I am hoping to get RI to help me with this, as this has ruined my experience of owning my first pony.

Rode out on own today and met two mountain bikes, she went mad and I chose to dismount, rather than fall off again. RI said i should try and stay on and keep her calm.!!

Glad there are other people who are having scary experiences with new pony.

I've had a fab day with my horse - I posted earlier in the week that because I was of on my hols I was going to spend some quality time with Thea addressing the nervous nelly 'issues' that had been creeping back in recently and today we achieved a double whammy....we cantered for 1/2 the school AND we went out in the stubble fields on our own with my OH watching from a safe distance this time and she didn't nap once and infact felt as cool as a cucumber!! Tomorrow I'm going to have a go without any back up and hope it really 'spurs' me on to getting back out and hacking properly again - I was so chuffed with us both! I know that cantering in the school probably doesn't sound that 'wow' but when I bought her, canter was pretty much non-existent and she's my first own horse and we've gone through some bronchoing to get here- hence the nerves!! Slowly but surely...................:D

Here's some pics, a bit blurry because they are stills from a video but proof!!!
I have had advice from lots of people but the best ones are those who say to go at your own pace and not worry what others 'might' think - say no when you aren't comfortable doing something and set little goals and more people suffer with nerves than you realise!!

tomorrow morning frankie and I are going on our first hack with someone from the yard, think we're going on the roads so they'll be buses and all sort about :eek: Must.Stay.Relaxed.

Well done everyone who has achieved something new this week or has just felt better about their riding/horse in general and good luck for your next goal. I was trying to explain to my OH about the nerves thing and how frustrating it can be when all you want to do is enjoy riding not worry about the 'what ifs' the great thing about achieving even the smallest thing is the boost of confidence it gives and that feeling of just wanting to hug your hossie whilst wearing the BIGGEST smile on your face :D

Well done! I think its a massive issue that you've got through so congratulations!!

Nat17, well tomorrow is another day, I know what you mean, the weather started to be absolutely dreadful earlier, let us know how you get on tomorrow, Im sending you positive vibes!

Shortcake, welcome and any pics of your new horsey?

Pigletsmum - oooh good luck! Is it your first time by yourselves?

Well, I did manage to go out on Tia for a little 10 min walk around the paddocks with my RI in front. Its such a small thing, I know, but I was so pleased with myself lol. She did shy at a scary monster black hay bale cover that was flapping - at the same time as her back legs went into a huge puddle, but came back to walk pretty quickly. The amazing thing is I wasnt too scared, especially as she lurched forward into a canter for a stride. So I am feeling a teeny bit proud of myself as that is the scary part of all the hacks - past loads of machinery, flapping bags, tyres, etc, and she only reacted once, and it was such an instantaneous thing that we were both fine.

Good luck tomorrow for everyone and their goals.

This summer I have done CC jumps on a few occasions which is fine, however, one or two jumps couldnt be used as the take off area was muddy, but they make me feel faint at the thought of jumping them...why?? They have a drop on the other side:eek: I have done this before in my teens and I remeber then I didbnt like it! I dont want to be a wuss and sit those jumps out, any tips on jumping them?

Well went up this morning, caught him fine :D Tacked up and it started raining so decided to just do some schooling with no jumps, weather got worse though, very windy and heavy rain, he was quite spooky too which he has never been in the school before but put it down to the weather. He was a good boy though so i'm quite pleased with how it went today :) Hope the weather picks up a bit tomorrow.

can i be a part-time nervous nellie pls - riding big hoss ruby i am a happy little camper - altho she is strong/spooky & huge - my RI rode her in my lesson today & even she said how strong & exciteable she can be BUT new hoss oliver - well its another story - we were starting to make tiny progress before my hols actually riding him in the big field & had even come off the lunge line - but today - decided to ride & was feeling really quite positive - went down to schooling field - lunged him first as he was in a foul mood & the little s** bolted from the lunge line & careered off at speed with flapping lunge line - it was horrible - we did catch him & lunge him fine but now have even more reasons for not wanting to ride him - feel really despondent tonight

Do you know if anything spooked him? 2 weeks ago Thea spooked, broke from her headcollar and bolted around her field half tacked up with bridle, martingale & half a lead rope all dangling and crashing around her legs  it was very scary so know how you feel (just waiting for horse to take a big tangled tumble & break something). I was dreading tacking her up again 2 days later thinking she'd remember how scared she was and would associate it with her bridle (even if she had spooked herself ) but the only one who remembered the incident was me - she didn't flinch even though I was a bit shaky and trying so hard not to let it show. So try not to worry, go back and lunge him again to get your confidence back in that and then take it from there when you're ready. I didn't get back on for about 5 days after our little 'episode' but she was good as gold when I did, again only me who was worried about anything! Chin up & good luck, I hope it works out with Oliver - I'm sure it will (Although have to admit I don't tie Thea anymore, just thread the leadrope through a loop of string and leave it - she seems to stand quieter because there's no resistance!!)

Did you go on your hack? How was it? :)

I was hoping to go a bit further with my hacking in the open fields today but the wind and rain put me off, too many monsters in the hedges on days like today! :o

sadly i could cope with oliver so much better if i actually believed that he was scared - he waited until i was changing the lunge line clip over - knew my attention was slightly off him & took the opportunity to bolt back towards his own field - with my crumbling confidence it doesnt take much to give me a "reason/excuse" not to ride him

I am deeply evnyous of your fields full of stubble! We have loads, but a farmer who hates horse riders and will let no one on his land. :( Can we come and play, you must be fairly local! :)

I have some weird hacking fears. I utterly detest road riding. However, as long as where I am riding has some kind of a boundary and no cars I am fine. It's not even like our guys are bad with traffic, 99% of the time they won't bat an eyelid.

Still, I took Rio out in company last weekend and managed to stay relaxed enough that he didn't get all silly. Small steps and all that.

My advise, for what it's worth, is push yourself if it is something you really want to do or overcome, but don't let anyone else dictate to you what your goal or target for that day should be!

Pity your farmer is against it as you can't do any damage - only fertilise the soil!!

It's not even like our guys are bad with traffic, 99% of the time they won't bat an eyelid. I am the same - I'd like to move to a yard where there's proper off road hacking even though my girl seems pretty good with most traffic and we don't have to do much road work, mostly lanes but need to cross main A4 for some rides. My worry is getting dumped in the woods and her running for home....such a worrier:rolleyes:

I went in the school instead today although that's still outside but the wind made it difficult to do much at all - typically though once I'd untacked, the sun came out...looks good for tomorrow though so hopefully nice conditions to hack around in - wind across those fields just isn't fun!! :)

I am such a nervous nellie. Have had Ozzy for 4 moths now and have only jst really started riding him. I had some lessons in the field at the old yard to start with and fell off during a spook. The YO at the first yard we were at hit and kicked Ozzy when i first had him so that made things awful (this is a different story). Anyway we moved yards a month ago and the girls who keep their pony at the new yard with me have helped me lots, their mum even walked out with us with a lead rope in case i got scared.

Anyway i have started to hack with my instructor walking over the past week after a rather amusing attempt at hacking alone which resulted in Ozzy backing himself into a wall and standing there looking around for a while :). Anyway we are now having major napping problems on the road especially near the old yard as he wants to go back there (god knows why???) so it turns into a battle with Ozzy going left me turning him right and the instructor shouting instucions to me. I won tonight with only a minor fight. Have also changed to a pelham as Ozzy has zero respect for the snaffle and has no brakes at all in it.

I feel i would be happier riding in full body armour :D

Whey hey - we did it!! Have almost calmed down now

After the disappointment with the wind and rain yesterday scuppering my 'solo hacking' plans, I woke up to glorious sunshine this morning so whilst the going looked good I went up to the field and tacked Thea up. I was going to take her in the school first but then thought I'd just try and go for it. One of the horses was already out and that left one in the field which was a bit worrying as I didn't want her to start calling when we set off.

Luckily by the time we were ready to go the other hoss was back so that was a good distraction. I got on and headed towards the stubble field and she went off well. I walked her to the middle of the first part of field (alongside her paddock) and then turned her away from it, she was hesitant but still going (I was seriously trying to get my legs to relax!) we wandered down the field doing a few turns and walk/trot/halt transitions and circling whenever she (or me) felt tense. All went well until we got almost to the end of the field and a jogger appeared on the footpath, The suddenly grew a few hands higher and began to nap (I just didn't want her to rear) so turned a circle and stopped to let her watch the jogger go past and knew I had to be really positive - to convince her I was confident (what a bluff!) . Thankfully she went off fine again when asked but we were at the point now when I turn for home so she almost feels like she's levitating and I just hope she doesn't suddenly think ahh off I go!! Again more circles and we walk back to the middle of where we'd come from not directly home. Eventually got back to the path where she knows is homeward bound! Got her to trot which was very lively (wish I could get that energy in the school!) but she came back to walk when asked and halted too - although I picked a bad point as a gust of wind whipped through the hedge which took us both by surprise:eek:. I could see her field mates watching at the gate by now and so could she but she didn't misbehave even if she was on her toes a little and we were soon back - big sigh from me and lots of praise for Thea.......hurray our first time in the BIG open field with no one watching over us, I'm so chuffed with her this week - I have almost achieved everything I planned to do this week, its just too hard in our school to jump, I am so happy though - just need to keep this up. Thanks for listening if you got this far, I'd offer you my huge iced bun but I've just eaten it :D

Hope you are all having positive Saturdays!! :)

Well, this summer I think I have got a lot better with my hacking with Storm. The year started rather badly as I had my first fall off her in over 4 years! It was a combo of windy day, fog and the fact that she'd been on limited turnout. However, that didn't stop me being nervous about getting back on board!
So far so good, I've managed to hack her most mornings before work - that is until this windy weather came!!! Haven't ridden for the past couple of mornings, but then again, I'm not too worried as I know we can get back into the swing of things. I feel much better about her, than say 7 months ago.
Its only a small goal but I'd love to hack her right around our land and do a proper full circular instead of the mini hacks I've been doing!! Theres no road work so I sometimes wonder what am I waiting for?! (good weather me thinks!)

RRA - loved reading your post! Shame you'd only got the one iced bun....hehehehehe, sounds like you deserved it! Well done to you. Joggers / walkers always seem to pop out at the most inopportune moments don't they?!!!! Thing is, if I come across them, its me that tenses up - not myhorse, and I have a devil of a job trying to relax. I have got to the stage now tho, where I will still keep up with the singing, despite having an audience.....!!
