new zealand rug???

New Zealands were originally waterproofed canvas rugs for outdoor use that weighed about a ton when wet, then took 3 weeks to dry! Some people call any turnout rug a new zealand though, even when they're not!

i still have an originall new zeland dont use it anymore because its a bit tired looking but it was fantastic warmest rug ever! and in yrs to come when i am grey and walking with a cane i will take it to antiques roadshow and say "this si the best rug that money could buy in my day"

is a new zealand rug the same as those old jute rugs you used to get that looked like a potato sack!!:p haha. but yeah i agree i would think that it would just be another name for a turn out rug:)

Nope, a jute is a jute!! They are, as you say, the hessian rugs that were used before modern materials gave us stable rugs. They were also quite heavy but very warm and cosy.

A new zealand rug was a waterproofed canvas rug, usually with a woolen blanket lining that we all used before synthetic, breathable, lightweight rugs came along! Previous to about the late 1980s they were the only turnout rug available. Some people do still call turnout rugs 'New Zealands' just out of habit.

we only have new zealand rugs for turnout. they only get a rug on if they are clipped out and these have stood up to the test of time (so far) and are well wearing so no point getting a new one.

quite heavy i must admit, but brilliant rugs.

It's probably politically incorrect or even against the law to call them New Zealand rugs any more, unless they were indeed manufactured and purchased in New Zealand. The Rug Police will be out confiscating all fake New Zealand rugs and if they hear you calling yours a New Zealand when it's simply a Robinson's Not So Bad Turnout Rug, your horse will be clamped and you'll have to pay a hefty fine to get it released.

:D

Thanks!! its just in my riding school they always call them that!!:)

I hope you didn't think I was being sarcastic, I'm sorry if it came across that way... I'm a really old person and was mocking the way things are today, what you can and can't say. It wasn't aimed at you, love.
