What do you do with yours once you have bought a new one?
I replaced mine a while back but kept hold of the old one, no second hand market for them really, does anyone know of a charity or similar who takes them, or do you just bin them?

You should not only bin them, you should destroy them first. A riding hat has a life of about 4 years, and its history is unknown so not safe to risk someone using it. I think Wally gave dramatic pics once of sawing through a hat. Replacing riding hats after a fall used to be a major expense for me as I fell off regularly once a year.
In fact (unless it has suffered a hard knock) I do keep my previous hat to wear when grooming or working on the yard. One of my gt aunts was killed by her horse by a kick to the head while on the ground. So in this family we always wear hard hats round horses. But I never liked to risk having my "new best" hat at the yard when helping.

I keep mine in a row in my tack room. They hold good memories and I have sentimental value attached to them. I wouldn't pass them on to anyone because of safety issues. I have had a fall in one of them as well a
- not a bad one but I replaced it anyhow.

Thought as much.
Just replaced for a better version only a couple of years old and never dropped or involved in a fall. Just seems a bit of a waste.

I will take a hammer to it and take out some of my frustration on it!!!

Didn't they change the safety kite marks recently?? Means all old hats should be binned anyway as they are not valid for insurance and things I think.

The amount of folk who think it "trendy and well 'ard" to ride without straps is also scary.

We used to put a mallet through them so they could never be reconstructed or worn again.

The amount of folk who would turn up with a piece of riding kit claiming "they found it in their attic" that we knew we had previously binned.....
