Peelings anyone?

I think Potatoe is poisonous to horses - but I do keep a tub in the fridge and keep all the apple, carrot, parsnip etc bits each day which he gets in his supper - its cheaper than the whole thing! But I was told no potatoe or sweet potatoe - and I've found he doesn't like celeriac.

Please don't use them - potato is very poisonous to horses.

Well, actually that's not strictly true. It's actually the little green shoots that are poisonous - you know the little sprouty bits that come out of the skin? They contain a toxin which can cause very serious illness, even paralysis, in horses. But even if you can't see any sprouty bits, they may already be forming in the skin.

So best to steer clear!

Tattie peelings are fine so long as they are not green, If you've decided to eat the tattie yourself, the peel will be okay for a horse.

Tatties are not poisonous to horses, I know one chap who used to feed a large proportion of his horses hard feed as a tattie ration.

To be honest is it really worth the risk? I wouldn't chance it. Just because they don't look green doesn't mean that the toxin isn't already forming in the skin - it takes a while for the green shoot to actually break through and be visible.

I used to feed my old horses potato peelings it never did them any harm but I havent fed many to Pi simply because I got sick of people saying that I shouldnt, it was easier not to feed them and she isnt keen on them anyway.
It is the green ones that are poisonous or so I was always told.

Never given my horses potatos but a lady who used to be on our yard used to give her horse bananas in the skins and she said they were good for the horses ::confused:does anyone know

My mum used to always thow the tattie peelings over the fence to my boy, he lived into his thirties and he would eat the peel and leave his hay to blow away in the wind.

my big guy now, loves his banana peel too.

i've know a field master who fed his hunters and pointers tatties as a hard feed for years with no bother.... they all hunted and P2P'd regularily and sucessfullly.
and another person who always swore by tatties to put weight on...
both had healthy and happy horses!
