Hi all,

Well after a rather crashing fall on at the weekend ( Bump on the head and airlifted to hospital) Im feeling rather down, while my confidence in Oscar is not dented, although unable to ride yet due to knee injury, my confidence everywhere else seems to have vanished. Tried to drive the car today and found it incredibly dificult - everything seemed to be rushing at me or by me and it was quite scary, I'm frightened by the thought of returning to work and worrying that I won't cope with the busyness of it all... please tell me this is normal after a bang on the head as I feel like I'm going a bit bonkers just now. Sorry to waffle and I'm sure once I do get to ride all that will have gone too, so expect i'll be back for some moral support then.

Although I'm not experienced at this, I'd say it's normal.

You're probably suffering some post traumatic stress after the shock of what happened. My advice would be to not rush into doing anything you're not confident or comfortable doing; take small baby steps.

You could see your GP and explain, a couple of counselling sessions to get it off your chest may well help to 'alieviate' the build up that may be happening inside, even if you're not aware.

Glad to hear you're physically okay and happy to get back to horsey things. Just take it easy

I've had concussion twice, so I can completely sympathise with you. It is horrible :( hope you are feeling better soon. Did they say you are concussed?

It changes your whole personality and the way you react to things. I behaved so strangely after the first time. The second time it affected me even using cutlery. My brain wasn't functioning properly.

You shouldn't be driving, your brain can't handle the extra stress that situations like that put you in.

If I were you I would get signed off work and just rest, and that means rest your brain. No reading/internet/anything that stimulates your brain. Give it chance to heal. It may sound harsh, but you are resting your knee because it is injured, so rest your brain.

Worst injuries I have ever had to deal with :( the first time I didn't rest enough and tbh it took me a month to get back to normal. The second time I had my caring husband look after me and do everything. I was a right ratty cow as well. I refused to speak to anyone except him or my dad. Everyone else was just stressing me out. My emotions weren't right and to make it all worse my horse went down with suspected lami. I had people trying to tell me a million and one things and I was like ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. She was actually just foot sore, but my husband did everything I said just in case and he drove me to the stables every day- when I knew no one else would be there. I snapped and fell out with so many people that week. But got better quicker from resting more.

I may sound like a drama queen, but all I can say is if your emotions are different from normal, you have concussion, and take it seriously. Hope you are feeling yourself again soon.

Thanks girls,

Yes I have concussion :( was out cold for a good 6 or 7 minutes I'm told, went to see my GP last night as was so confused by the way I was feeling, she signed me off work and advised much the same as you said Miss Mare, rest rest and lots of it! She also put my mind at rest by telling me all this is normal following head trauma, I guess because there are no outward signs of injury you kind of think all is well.
Very scary for normally busy, forward thinking and perfectly capable people to suddenly become a blithering idiot who can't even drive without being panic striken, forgetting all sorts of simple things like where the window buttons are in my car, and which way to walk down the street to the shops, do I go left at the end of the drive or do I go right.... so thank you both again, it's nice to know I'm reacting the way I should be and for once Im taking doctors advice to the letter!
I asked her how long it would take to get back to normal - her answer, as long as it takes.... guess I'll just have to be patient.

If you've had a bang on the head don't expect things to make sense for a while. The effects can be confusing and scary.

Your reaction times and your thought processes might be a bit muddled for a while and you'll know you are not making any sense for a bit, I think it can be really scary. Don't worry, just take things steady for a while. If you were unconcious for that long it sounds like you had a serious biff.

A bump on the head messes up all the electrical impulses going on in your brain and it needs time to sort itself out again and they are all right, you need jjto just let it heal itself with rest.

i know the last time i had a bump on the head the next day i was trying to type and none of the words were coming out right...i was desperately trying to make a sentence but fingers werent going where they should have been, even though i thought they were...quite scary.

Echo everyone else, rest rest and more rest! Hope you are back to normal soon - but meanwhile make the most of NR and enjoy......

That sounds so familiar- normally so busy and then :help: the eating thing was so strange for me. I couldn't work out how to make my knife and fork work for me. It was like being a child learning how to do it all again. Very scarey, but perfectly normal given the circumstances.

Get plenty of rest and let it have time. Do lots of :sleep::sleep::sleep::sleep::sleep::sleep::sleep: and don't let anyone annoy you. If you are anything like I was, (normally laid back and friendly, suddenly couldn't stand people and told them what I thought. Actually did me some good with a couple of people). :giggle:

When you bump your head (even with your hat on) you rattle your brain inside your skull and it bashes around. The most serious head injuries often show no outward signs because it is brain, rather than bone, which is damaged.

I don't say that to scare you, the first aider in me can't help it :) just to underline what everyone else has said - that you've bumped your head like you've bumped your knee and it needs plenty of time to recover. Also, if you've been concussed, keep an eye out for any worsening confusion (as well as you can when already a bit flummoxed ) and if you get any headaches, get thee straight back to the GP.

Take care and hope you're feeling better very soon
