Since the move (two weeks ago), Kal has been on Magic to try and take the edge off. He is STILL very on his toes and spooky, still reluctant to hack out alone, most unlike him.

My instructor sat on him today (first time she's seen him since the move) and commented on how spooky/sharp he is . . . she recommended we try potassium bromide (a couple of the horses at her yard are on potassium bromide and it's helped). Have any of you tried it? How does it compare/differ to the magnesium supplements (the Magic appears to either be having NO effect or winding him up)?

Thanks in advance,

N

Sounds like he just needs more time to settle in, moving home can be pretty traumatic for some horses. I've not heard of feeding potassium bromide to horses, and to be honest I don't much like the sound of it. If magnesium has any calming effect it's only because the horse was short of it in their diet, it's not a sedative and doesn't act directly on the nervous system.

I had to dig out my veterinary books as i'd never heard of feeding potassium bromide to a horse. It's a neural suppressant more commonly used in domestic pets for treatment of seizures. tbh, i wouldn't be putting it in my horses feeds!! there are far better, more natural alternatives. But i do agree with Yann, sounds like he needs more time to settle. I'd be inclined to just sit it out and ride him through it. The side effects of potassium bromide are too scary for me to contemplate giving it to a horse. side effects include bromine poisoning, muscle tremors, severe sedation and general pain.
