Cheshire..but London right now
I went to visit my mare's son, Nemo, recently, and his owner asked me if my mare had a thumb mark. She showed me Nemo's, which was fairly large and on the underside of his neck, but I've never really noticed one on Lou before. Anyway, when I got back to the stables I set about looking for one with determination (sign of a good arab after all!) and realised that what I'd always just considered a 'dimple' in the front point of her shoulder just below the neck was actually a perfect fit for my thumb. Does anyone know what actually causes these imprints, or can I just go on believing that my horse is extra special? :D:D

Scooby has one. Farrier told me it was muscle damage from injection or similar. Dont know how much truth there is to it tho'.

Other people say they are lucky:rolleyes:

i dont know what causes them but blackie and ernie (old stallion we used to have) have them.

both amazing horses.

and i was told by my dad, if i ever went to buy a horse and it had one, to get it so there must be something about them :D
was something to do with luck and something else i think...

Don't see how as my boy has had one since he was a foal - before injections and before any accidents! I shall go on believing it's supposed to be a sign of good luck (although I'm still waiting for some ) Apparently a prophet (not sure which one as not religious!) is supposed to pick out the best and luckiest horses at birth by reaching down and touching them with his thumb - hence prophet's thumb mark!

Odin has one - no idea why

Vol now has one on his shoulder which is from muscle damage when he tore his shoulder

This is the story I found about it:

The five mares of Mohammed

by Ilil Arbel, Ph.D.

The hot desert wind blew against the tent, driving the dust inside. Fatima walked softly in, carrying an earthenware jug full of cold water, and handed it to the Prophet. "Please, stop tormenting yourself, Mohammed," she said, "drink some water!"

"I will drink when the test is over, and the horses can drink, too. I cannot drink knowing they are thirsty," said the Prophet to his daughter.

"I do not understand this test, nor do I like it," said Fatima angrily. "Depriving the horses from drinking for three full days is cruel. I cannot believe you would do it, a man who loves animals better than himself!"

"I must. Allah commanded me -- would you have me disobey God? The spread of Islam depends greatly on the loyalty and strength of our horses. The best of these horses, said Allah, will be honored till the end of time... But it is the evening of the third day now, so let us go to the horses and conduct the test."

He took a horn that hung at the tent’s entrance, and walked toward an enclosure where about a hundred horses were confined, a little distance from the water hole of the oasis. The horses looked reproachfully at their beloved master as he quickly opened the gate. Tormented by thirst, the horses galloped to the water hole, but before they could reach it, Mohammed raised the horn to his lips and sounded the call for war.

The horses ignored it. They were so thirsty that perhaps they couldn’t even hear it, and went on galloping toward the water. But not all of them. Five mares stopped. Without hesitation, they turned around and returned to Mohammed, ready to do whatever was required of them.

The Prophet stroked their silky manes, tears in his eyes. He led them to the water and envisioned the glorious future as they drank. He knew that these mares would foal the finest of Arab horses, the only horses of pure blood, the horses that would help bring Islam to every corner of the Earth.

Apparently, these mares were then marked with Mohammed's thumb print and all their off-spring are supposed to bear the mark too. Given that so many breeds have Arab blood nowadays, it could be true :D

My coloured cob mare has one smack bang in the middle of her neck, no idea what causes them though!! You can fit your thumb quite nicely in it though!

I have to agree with above but am willing to be proved wrong! Robbie, our Sec B has one in his neck, didn't notice it when we bought him - only noticed it after injection when he had colic.

Nelson has one of these, I gave it a good poke and prod thinking he was melting or something (always hated the rain!) It just appeared over night though... or I never noticed it before

Good to know its a good sign, he wasn't a good horse to start with but he is getting there :p

Only Arabians indentations are the prophets thumb print. There are other indentations caused by all manner of things.....
An arab owner who has known many thumb prints!
Love your research Hannah;);)

My Andalucian has a very clear one - which is notated on his passport as a distinguishing mark. Again - though some purists don't like to acknowledge it I'm told - they have Arabian blood.

I always thought that a prophet's thumb mark was a red thumb print on a horse's shoulder, like an appaloosa's leopard markings, but just one, and on a grey.

Or am I getting confused with bloody shoulder markings?

Skye's got one that he was born with(PBA), you can see it clearly in some of the pics in my albums. I've been told it's from where their hind feet pressed while they were in the womb, though I don't know if that's true. Considering my boy came out of a 14hh mare and his legs were longer than hers at birth, it could happen!
Some of the Arab legends are brilliant, the one about the blood markings is really sweet too :)
