Sorry, wasn't sure where to put this as I don't entirely know what it is!

I know it's an indentation... said to be from the prophet, and occurs on arabs

But, how does it occur, and is it only on arabs?

Only heard of it last night in a casual conversation! Thanks

its an indent on the chest or neck area and as far as I know any breed of horse can have one, Flash did and she was section D welsh cob.

It also appears to be muscular.

we call it a potters thumb and my cousin has it on her appy i think its like the dents you get in your legs the word starts with a C but i don't remember it its like.. colegen or something

Funnily enough i noticed one on Riley last night on his neck and he's part Arab. I thought it looked like cellulite too but am happier to call it a prophet's thumb print :D

Taffy has a couple up his neck (he's a Sec D). My vet said its fine and not to worry it's actually considered lucky.

Found these quotes off another site..

'A birthmark in the form of an indentation, usually found on the side of a horse’s neck. It’s believed that a horse with such a mark will be outstanding, as it is allegedly a descendant of one of the five brood mares that the Prophet Mohammed particularly treasured and marked with his own thumbprint.'

'A widespread belief tells of how any horse that has a groove in its neck is to be treasured and treated with great respect as it believed to come from a the line of horses that belonged to the Prophet Mahomet. If you can place your thumb gently into the groove on the neck, which is known as the 'Prophet's Thumb Print', then the horse is allegedly connected to one of the five brood mares that Mahomet owned, and therefore sacred.'

And just because I love the stories, here it is if your intrested;

As test of his faith in the Lord, M was asked to go deep into the desert with his loyal herd of 500 Arab horses and to keep water and food from them until the Lord told him otherwise. Because M loved every single horse he owned, he begged and pleaded the Lord to change his mind, but he would not and instead he demanded that his request be honered without question. The horses were driven out into the desert and eventally corraled not far from an oasis of high green palm trees and sweet blue water. M and his army camped nearby and took care of them. M did not eat or drink either and on the 3rd day the Lord asked him to save himself and drink. He answered, my lord I cannot for I hear my wonderfull horses calling for water all through the night. Whatever they feel, I feel, what pain they are in, I am in also. Lord, I will not drink until they drink.
The next morning, the Lord orders M to release his horses so that they may drink, but, he says, "Just as they reach the waterhole, you must call them back. If they trust you and have faith, they will return."
The horses sniffed and snorted at the air as the gate was opened, they were desperate for a drink and they charged for the waterhole. M stepped out to them and called as they galloped away. All 500 horses galloped on, but for 5 mares, who stopped when they heard his calls and turned to look at their master. Despite their screaming thirst, they moved towards him and he in turn walked to them. The other 500 horses were now drinking their fill as M held each one of his 5 mares by the neck and led them back to his tent. "These 5,' said the Lord, 'will be your brood mares, these are the mares that will be the foundation of the Arab horse empire and each is exceptional and blessed, they will carry you to victory."

Aww my Trooper has a big one on the left hand side of his neck and a small on in the same area on the right hand side of his neck.
Aww my Poopa is extra special then ;)

My young mare Asu has one. Find it hard to believe shes lucky. She went away to be broken to ride, and the buggers broke her mind instead:( Shes recovering slowly.

Lexi has two!! One on her neck and the other is on her chest - I was only discussing this last night with a friend at my yard, she pointed them out and said that they were meant to be lucky :D

My old horse has one on her neck. When I first saw it I asked the vet if she could have been in an accident its that deep. It litterally is a thumb print and deep. I'd heard of them but had thought they were just like a small dent. Vet just looked at me and went "Its a prophet thumb print"
