i moved yards a few months ago...with the aim to have lessons on Moet, but since i moved the schools pretty much been frozen.

i do kinda feel im avoiding having lessons though despite the weather.......i feel so unbalanced in the school and Moet isnt brilliant either in the school, and im terribly paranoid about the instructor judging me and thinking we are crap (which we are)!

i know the whole point of having lessons is to improve us but i feel sick everytime i go to ring the instructor and then dont actually ring! im pathetic!

also ive been really enjoying hacking lately and dont really want to go in the school even when its not frozen....i think im seriously just avoiding lessons though! arghh!

I can understand how you feel. Some instructors can be pretty scary! But think how great it would be if you found the right instructor and your riding improved making life much nicer for yourself and your horse  Ask around, get some personal recomendations, phone instructors and ask if you could watch them teach. Don't be afraid of only having one or two lessons with an instructor then trying someone else if you don't feel you are getting on or getting anything out of the lesson. The hard part is find an instructor you "click" with.

Do NOt book a lesson because you feel you "ought" to! I haven't had one for a couple of years now, even tho I now have access to my own school. Reason? Well, I just don't want to and thats that! I'll know when the time is right and its just not atm. Storm and me are doing things slowly but surely - and whoever I got to come down and teach me would either push me outside my comfort zone (and I'm waaaay too old for that and too scared of damaging myself) or decide my technique was all wrong. Which it probably is. But, so far as I know, I am not hurting either the horse or myself - so thats all fine and dandy. One of these days I'll fancy booking one. Don't put pressure on yourself. If you're enjoying hacking then just do that, there's a lot to be said for it.

well.....just to update....i had my first lesson today!!!!!

was a last minute thing, somebody cancelled their lesson and i had it offered to me yesterday, so i thought why not!....i was terribly nervous before hand, just didnt really know what to think/expect.

Well...it was fantastic!!! i wish i hadnt put it off for so long! the instructor is lovely, really patient and kind. She totally understood my concerns about pushing moet and our limitations (due to her past injury and my confidence). Moet was a super star and i felt i learnt loads just in the hour!

i look forward to having regular lessons now as it was really confidence building and interesting! and she thought Moet was lovely and that i was a good rider (with not too many bad habits!! lol)

Just picked up your story.
I think you should have lessons - it is fair for you and your horse if you can ride well.
So I'm really pleased you have found a nice instructor but think it is a worry that you have had some not so nice experiences with instructors in the past.
Anyway, you have something to look forward to now, so best of luck.
