I'm trying to persuade OH that we need a couple of yard cats for just this reason. Unfortunately we've had to use poison in the past, in a bait box I hasten to add. Not something we're completely happy with but far better than hitting them over the head with a shovel.
Our problems hasn't been so much the rats but the weasels only because you daren't turn your back on a sandwich for more than a second as if it's not bad enough that the dogs try and get it the weasels are so tame they come and nick it off you as well.
Edited: Not that I want the cat to kill the weasels though, they're hilarious and cause no harm.
