What's your thoughts about this?

A yard friend has just adopted and rehomed a puppy from Romania...it's being flown over in a few weeks....

not a fan. rescues over here are overflowing with local dogs and I think that where there is a large population of strays, neutering programs or humane killing are a better option (*hides behind sofa*).

Everything NP said. Terribly sad and absolutely cannot look at some of the pictures of the poor street dogs that are often posted on Faceache.

But I just cannot understand why people won't rescue from the many tens of thousands of dogs that are regularly euthanised in the pounds in the UK and Ireland? Why is it apparently, OK to kill dogs here that are on death row - but unacceptable to allow it to happen in foreign places?:frown:

Clean your own doorstep first, then look farther afield when dogs and cats are safe and guaranteed homes here, which of course will never happen anyway?

I have met some lovely dogs who were rescued from abroad.

However, I agree with both the previous posters. Better to rescue an unwanted dog here, and donate the quarantine costs to a good cause locally.

I think that you would need to be a very experienced dog owner to adopt a (potentially badly socialised)street dog in preference to a rescue dog in the UK. I agree with the previous posts, and so it seems do most people... I don't therefore understand how these rescues gain momentum and what motivates people to make that choice. I sometimes wonder if it is a social media peer pressure type phenomenon.

Its desperately sad for all the innocent animals involved, just recently Ive seen various stories however about how difficult it has been for people to actually rescue from UK centres I can understand why some people have gone abroad.

Its appauling what goes on in this country with animal cruelty, it does look alot worse what they do in Romania, but me personally I would rescue in the uk.

Glad all the responses match my reaction (though I didn't say anything at the time as it's none of my business).

I think she rehomed from abroad as she thinks uk rescues wouldn't even entertain the idea of letting her have one as she has two young children.

The dog she rehomed is a puppy, picked up as a tiny puppy and has been in a foster home since....she has been assured it's been socialised adequately....

my YO has two from Crete, lovely sweet dogs but so much money spent on getting them over here. the cynic in me sees a profitable 'industry' in stray dogs, too ...

I have heard that it can be quite difficult to meet the criteria required for re homing in the uk? Not sure how true that is but I do know of an acquaintance that struggled to re home a dog and she tried several times and several charities. So far as I know she was pretty experienced too so I don't know - maybe folk feel its just easier to re home from abroad? I could be talking twaddle so don't shoot me!!!

I think its good that many dont rehome to families with young children, I personally would never get an older dog of unknown history with a toddler in the house so can understand that, Id only want to get a pup from weaning. I have a thing about big dogs around small children! I certainly wouldnt take from abroad with young kids. Im probably a bit neurotic about all that though!

That recent case where a rescue homed some huge mastiff thing to a single mum living in a flat which mauled the child to death I find particually horrific. I suppose rescues have to be so careful. There is a rescue where I got my old dog from ( as a weaned pup nearly 14 yrs ago) We literally walked in - chose a puppy, paid and took him home. This I found very bizarre, and it still operates like that to this day. It is a big rescue setup with 2 very large plush branches in the Northwest. That I find very irresponsible.

my friend does already have a 5 year old German Shepard so is an experienced dog owner....i just thought how sad that she feels she has to resort to rehoming a dog from abroad because she wouldn't be considered for a dog from a UK rescue....

Though i agree with you Notpoodle....
