I have noticed recently that my mare has had an attack of thrush, I have been picking her feet out twice daily along with using either purple spray or iodine spray. They seem to fix it for a while but then it comes back.

She is stabled at night but I have a view of that if I wouldnt lay down on her bed then why should she ;) stupid I know but its just me.

Anybody have any ideas for a better treatment for thrush?

Thanks

Carrie

The one that worked for me was Keratex frog disinfectant. The beauty of that was that a weekly treatment with it should keep the thrush at bay.

Whatever treatment you choose I'd be tempted to continue with it for at least a few days after you think the thrush has gone :)

I spray feet 4-5 times weekly with purple spray (aerosol agriculture one as its stronger and cheaper) which seems to work. However when one of mine did get thrush i used hydrogen peroxide syringed in for a couple of days which done the trick. Although it shouldn't be used for too many days in sucession as it is strong stuff!

My vet gave me some stuff when Jen had a nasty bit of thrush i couldn't get rid of called sole paint. it's a formaldehyde/ copper sulphate mix, we used it 3days in a row and then weekly and touch wood it's not been back since. We have to be carefull as its not nice stuff (you wouldn't want to get it on your hands)

For mild cases i've always used purple spray

Red Horse Products like feild paste or sole paint (but not like the one mentioned above)

These products have natural based ingredients in them that help maintain the hoof's moisture balance and does not damage the frog or sole structure.

The feild paste is the best in my opinion, you apply it once a week in to the colateral grooves and it stops thrush in its tracks and promotes a healthy frog.

Top stuff and its what all my clients use and all of them have said their horses haven't had any thrush since and thats will them using it for well over a year now. I can also vouch for this as i trim theur horses feet and the frogs are all healthy and strong. :D

Sudocrem. It's what a farrier years ago told me to put on thrush and it really works. As soon as mine get a touch of thrush they get thier frogs etc plastered in sudocrem and it clears up in a couple of days

Sudocrem never heard of that one but will give it a try, have tonnes of that in the house for my toddler :D

A quick scrub with hibiscrub once week works for me. It's part of our weekly routine now.

If I find it returning then I just do it for a couple of days in a row and leave it on being careful only to get it on her frog. Normally I give her feet a quick hose afterwards.

I've also heard that manuka honey or sudacrem work well, I just find a little dish with some water, hibiscrub and a stiff brush is more convenient and quicker.

Wow, I actually used purple spray on my loan cobs feet after noticing a bit of thrush thinking, hmm, it's a disinfectant but not actually knowing that this was recommended! I guess my instincts were right and I love the Sudocrem idea!

You need to be really careful what you use on thrush, lots of things kill the thrush but also do damage to the hoof tissue - which then means the thrush has lovely damaged tissue to regrow with a vengence on! Beware of Peroxide, tars, any bleaches, iodine and formaldehydes as they can make matters worse in the long run.

I am with Samboc in the Red Horse Products vote, clears it up fast and improves hoof quality rather than making it worse - they are at www.red-horse.co.uk and they give to charity each time you buy! Cant be bad!
