Rescue dogs on BBC1 ...

I have Eric from the pound. My collie pup, Splash was actually a semi rescued pup at nearly 5 months old. He was living chained on a farm. Both are the softest wee things:wub:

Its a damn disgrace with these poor Staffies. In my local town all the junkies have young staffies. Once they get older they seem to vanish and the next pup appears:mad:

ETA: we got a staffie cross type

How could anyone abandon this cutie lol ? ....

I decided not to watch as thought it might be upsetting - have met some lovely staffies in my time. As with most animals - it's bad owners who cause the problems not the animals themselves.:banghead:

Just watched :frown: ... what IS the answer???? just today someone on my fb is lamenting that she has to get rid of her 2 staffy's (ones a 7mth old pup)

I had to stop myself from commenting as to why she had bought 2 young dogs as a single parent living in rented accommodation :stomp: I know peoples circumstances change but ffs.

Compulsory neutering might help?? I know you cant tell with bitches but its easy to see a staffy wandering along with its bits and bobs in full view. Anyone wanting to keep a dog entire needs a licence perhaps? Compulsory microchipping? A hefty fine for those who dont microchip - and the occasional blitz on areas to make folk worried enough to do it.

It makes me so angry:mad:

im so glad i missed the programme. We have a staffie x lab, he is absolutely adoreable. Both of ours are from rescue centres, i honestly do feel quite strongly about rehoming animals, not breeding and buying pedigrees (dont want to offend anyone though if they are keen on buying pedigrees.....all entitled to feel differently!)

Made me cry.

People are so, so irresponsible.

I think vets etc should report the owners of any unneutered cats/dogs whenever they come in for treatment.

Noone should be allowed to keep a dog entire unless they are prepared to register as a breeder and pay tax on the income they make and pay extra for holding a license and to have inspections.

I also dont think people should be allowed to just hand a dog/cat in when they have had enough and walk away from their responsibility - no matter how their situation has changed.

They should have to pay £10 a month whilst the dog is in care. It isnt much but it would help pay for the dogs care/treatment/food until the dog is found a new home or put to sleep and they should be informed if the latter happens so they cant pretend anything else happened.

It shouldnt be as easy as taking an old jumper to a charity shop when you dont want it any more.

i watched that program too. I live in an area where every junkie scum bag has a staffie. One was training their dog to fight, it didn't twig with me until i watched a program on animal planet (an american dog welfare thing) and they mentioned getting a dog to attack and hang off a suspended tyre was part of fight training. Couple of calls into the local dog warden, social services (the owner had small children in the house also ) and SSPCA and the tyre is gone, but i haven't seen the dog either :(

I get very, very annoyed about things like this. Getting a dog is a long term commitment, they are not fashion accessories and they are not weapons. they need proper feeding, proper exercise and proper veterinary care. I doubt any of the staffies on my road get that. How to stop it? i don't know... You could bring back dog licences but as with everything these people will find a way around it. Getting to the root cause (poverty, lack of ambition and drugs) is probably the best way. That almost leads on to the other program i watched last night about drugs and the failings of the UK drugs laws and enforcement. i was feeling rather depressed by the time i went to bed!!!!

HorseHelen - your wee one is gorgeous!!! i'd love to rehome a staffie, i think they can make cracking dogs.

I already knew all this was going on. The programme was quite tame in the grand scheme of things, the reporter didn't really get to the nitty gritty, the figures he got back from councils are the ones that replied. Worse goes on in the ones that didn't I imagine. I am in touch with a dog charity Rain Rescue, which is there to help these staffies. It is so frustrating knowing how many are being PTS and then you see a friend (term used lightly) on facebook asking for a staffy male to go with their female. The number of times I have tried to explain and all I get back is "But mine is well bred, they wont end up in rescue", weeks later they are wanting homes and can't find them :banghead: I don't know what the answer is, a cull (which doesn't help the dogs at all :()
Maybe a law similar to the horse micro-chipping law. Every puppy sold must be microchipped, and registration becomes similar to car ownership? So if owner details change they have to be kept up to date. Maybe the hassle and cost of registering the dogs might put some people off breeding them. It's so sad, Staffies are so easy to breed (don't have problems during birth) and have such big litters, it just makes the whole problem worse.

I went to Romania a couple of years ago. They used to have a problem, but they just neutered all the dogs and let them go free - there are stray dogs everywhere, charities have feeding points for them. They don't cause too much of a problem, and I didn't see a single aggressive dog whilst there, mainly because they are all socialised. That just wouldn't work here though.

Who will pay for the neutering though? Its a great idea to neuter and I advise anyone I sell pups to have their dog/bitch neutered before its a year old if its a pet as it is better for the animal health wise and makes the owners life easier.
Dog licencing didnt work and can't see how chipping will work either. who will enforce it? Who knows what the rules & regs are anyway? I know you have to wear collars and ID's but don't know the ins and outs of it and none of my 16 dogs wear collars as they are working dogs and (I believe) exempt anyway but how do these rules get rolled out to the general population?
