Rescue hens

Lillian Beckwith, in her books, always described that background, theraputic hen noise as "the questioning of hens" I like that.

Mine queue to get into the flippin' house, and often fo, but the dog knows how to gently reound them up and out the door again. A mother hen and 12 chicks makes a good job of the breakfast room carpet. Clear up all the bits. and leave one dollop to remove with kitchen towel! :D :D

Hehehhe, I can just imagine a trail of cluckies following OH and myself into the house - lovely! (We have stone flagged floors so not a problem with chicken whoopsies!!!)

Mine have been locked in their run more than I like for the past few months as the foxes around here have been bold and around during the day - even pootling across the field about 20ft from me:mad:

It is wonderfully restful to watch the girls when they are out and about.
Even the horses will follow the chooks around.

I rescued some quite a few years ago. These were 'free range' and were in massive, artificially lit barns with 4000 in each one with access to a bare paddock. (Marks and Spencer suppliers) The mutilated beaks were unbelievable yet they manage to eat well enough and lived for another 4 years on average.

I helped out LHR when they had 10 thousand hens to rehome at short notice in the Summer. We had two van loads brought to here and several other temporary coordinators set up around the country.

I've now placed all but the last six. This includes this one -

No it isn't a cockerel but appears to be a hermaphrodite or intersex chicken. He/she doesn't crow and has probably never laid an egg but is feather perfect and would make a great pet.
