Anyone ridden in a royal park with their own horse? I presume you can't just rock up on the day with a trailer in tow 🤣

Probably looking at Richmond Park or possibly Wimbledon Common.

We're aware emission and ultra low emisson zones will be a consideration but before we email the royal parks tomorrow thought I'd see if anyone else has done it and if it is worth it!

I looked at the website for the riding school that rides over Wimbledon Common. They ride three times a day in the morning.
I would guess if its anything like where we use, there are designated zones for riding at anytime but no trailer parking. The no trailer parking is in force now as the gates are manned.

Eta found this and they accommodate trailers and you can download your routes.

Thats a really helpful map @newforest . Thank you!

I thought Wimbledon Common would be longer than 15 miles but hopefully the tea rooms in the middle is horse friendly :)

You can cross over from Wimbledon common to Richmond park there is a very nice horse crossing here, you might already know ā˜ŗļøIMG_20220508_143006.jpg

Sorry I'm not sure about parking in Richmond park itself.

I like the sound of the tea rooms.
We have a Cafe but I don't think it's overly horse friendly.
Put it this way you are not permitted to ride on the road leading up to it, so I suspect they don't want our custom. :)

Richmond Park is a Royal park. (see their web site)
It is not in the same category as Wimbledon Common which is a special common regulated by Act of Parliament and run by elected conservators.
There are Pegasus crossings for horses from Wimbledon Common to Richmond Park at Stag Lodge roundabout on the A3, and another Pegasus crossing over the Richmond to Kingston main road in Ham, so riders from the Park can to reach Richmond meadows and Ham. I have never ridden to Bushy Park and am not sure there is an adjoining bridle track. Someone else may know. There used to be a RS there, but I havent used it.

I am not clear about Park regulations on trailers in the car parks. You need to check. But the Police horse lorries always used to enter st Roehamton Gate and park at the big Roehampton Gate car park (inside the park, turn left after entering). I once saw a horse box in the Isabella Plantation car park but that was years ago.

You are not allowed to school or graze horses, nor to gallop in the Royal Parks. Riding is also restricted I think on weekend afternoons. (I am a weekday rider so unsure). In Richmond Park horse riding is tracks only in winter but in summer off track.

On Wimbledon Common one always has to ride horses on the allocated horse tracks.

I assume there is an allocated horse box parking spot in Hyde Park as people from our yard have ridden there. When I rode there, I didnt need parking. I hacked two or three times from a riding school near the Park, Ross Nye. For historical reasons I wanted to ride on Rotten Row and I did.

On my old share and when I hacked from Stag Lodge RS, we used to hack on Wimbledon Common and in Ham. But Richmond Park is better and (unless the Park was closed) we allow the riding schools in Wimbledon to have priority on Wimbledon Common. They use the school (arena) there for their lessons. Ella is restricted to Richmond Park. So I no longer hack as far and wide as I once did.

I have never ridden to the tea rooms. We use the loos there when dog walking. But I guess it is mainly tourists. If you dog walk there every day you dont buy coffee.

If anyone wants to meet me in Richmond Park (no horses) I can do that and point out to you the good places to ride. But I am not in favour of visiting riders as they tend to ignore the rules and have no manners about riding slowly and passing on the horse tracks.
Small children on lead out rides and adult beginners on lead rein have their first riding experiences in the Park and it is important to keep it slow and safe.

We have excellent places to canter but we dont canter when there are dogs and people or other riders around.

It is also not free. We residents pay local Common rates to cover the costs of the Commons conservation and we and the other local stables pay a contribution to the upkeep of the horse tracks in Richmond Park.

We realise we are immensely lucky to live near the Park which has been our veritable life line during Covid lock down. It tends to be less crowded than the Common, and the paths are wider and more varied to allow for better social distancing.

I grew up riding in bushy park and I wouldn't say it's suited to fast work, just nice long trots until you bump into people and dogs. It gets very busy there

We have a few pubs near us & coffee trucks we're able to use which are great in the summer months :) Such a shame you don't sound like you can use yours!

Oh, ok - thank you for that. If we've travelled in we'd definitely want to do a decent amount of canter work!

I'm spoilt where we are with so much off road hacking full of canter opportunities, so it would be a shame to not be able to. I guess that's the price you pay for London riding instead of countryside riding!

I'll email and ask, what we can expect I think :)

We can pop to the local pub though and I do sit out with her and have a picnic.

There are lots of people and dogs in Richmond Park too, especially since Covid. But they are no problem for a rider. Particularly as dogs must be on a lead from now till the end of the breeding season in September.

I know from years of hacking that the RS at Robin Hood Gate expect to provide a hacking client with two or three canters on an hour's hack. These are short, controlled canters. It isnt Badmington.

I dont know what you mean by canter work. I ride canter transitions but I once cantered Ella slowly and quietly and the YM behind, escorting me said she had never before seen anyone ride a dressage canter in the Park. If you mean fitten up your horse, then yes. I gather I take longer than most clients to ride the circult and I intend to do some timing next winter.

You can pick up a free horse riding leaflet with a map of the tracks at Pembroke Lodge car park. We share the horse track with cyclists and pedestrians. But there are not many of those in winter.

I have hacked with NR friends in the past, hacking from Stag Lodge RS. Going for a summer private hack from Stag Lodge RS is probably the best way to learn possible off track routes. (Or walk them with OH and me for free)

Being off track in woods is excellent (in walk) for steering all four feet of the horse and ducking overhanging branches. I learned this sort of control as RIs and our YM often tell a following client to tread in their horses footsteps. These days I dont ride where there are not paths as I dont want Ella to trip and go lame. One needs to be on constant look out for tree roots and mole hills.

But one should keep to the rules. These days the Park is closely supervised by Park police, becsuse there was a machete attack and the theft of a very valuable bike. There has also been more of what we call "urbanisation" of the park. Food, ice cream, new wide tracks for push chairs. The Police have off road small vehicles and when I ride I feel they are looking out for me. All RS staff in the Park wear hi viz and I usually do too.

People are very nice to me out riding, I guess because I am old but young exhibitionist riders are not popular. It is a funny combination of slow and laid back, with here and there lovely tracks to canter. In particular (and in summer only) there are drainage ditches with level paths alongside which are excellent for long flat canters if there is no one else about. The other day I asked a couple, Is it OK if I canter away from you? That means I am gong to ride away from you fast. It gives people a change to grab their dog or to tell me they arent certain.

The RS staff go for fast early morning rides but they do it early, as soon as the Park gates open. I have a mid morning riding time but just after Christmas I went out without seeing a sngle soul. Our daughter walks her dog on the same day as I hack, but I have never met her. The Park is about 4 square miles.

I dont know where you live Pepo. But I think that if you want to go for a gallop, you can do this on Epsom Downs in the afternoon. It is a long time since I rode there. You would need to check.

People out walking always want to know where Ella lives, and when I tell them, I also mention the RS where anyone can pay for a hack. There are still 4 yards in reach of the park.

I've emailed Royal Parks and the answer was to contact them later on in the Summer as it's too busy to accommodate horse boxes at the moment. We shall have to see if we can go and/or decide to go later on in the year!

They are looking to introduce parking charges, not sure when but just something to be aware of

Thank you :) I had actually assumed there would be parking charges, so it'll be a nice surprise if we go and there aren't any!

This is not personal but I offered to show @PePo the riding routes. I now see that in their Profile @PePo gives no info at all about themselves.
It is extremely stupid for anyone using social media to arrange to meet any unknown internet contact.
Dont do what I did. The offer is withdrawn.
I have met people from NR before and we once had an NR get together in a pub on the Strand in London. But we all had names and emails and phone numbers.

I grew up in Twickenham and rode at Park Lane stables a few times round Bushy Park (but my main stables was over in Hounslow because it was cheaper! šŸ˜‚) As a teenager I worked for a very short while as a groom for a stables in Kingston so I got to hack in Richmond Park a few times too. When I bought my first pony (parents couldn't afford so I had to wait until I was working and earning) I kept him for a while at a stables the Hampton Court side of Bushy Park, so was back to riding round there again.

Thanks for posting this, it's bright back some lovely (if a tad "dusty" šŸ˜‚) memories for me! 🄰
