A week and a haf ago i had Marley gelded, don't think he had ever covered any mares prior to this and until i got him shared a field with two other colts. Now although he has been done he is still showing stallion like behaviour but with other geldings not mares. He keeps trying to herd them from behind and get them into position to mount!! :hot:

Would Rigcalm help sort this out as obviously his hormones are still all over the place or would another supplement help?

I used Rigcalm on Tobes. Tobes was cut late and had bred a foal before I got him - clearly I didn't know this at the time I bought him!!!

I think it helped, but what REALLY helped him was Cool Calm and Collected from Equifeast.

He was evil during the loading period, but when I contacted them they said that was good, showed he was short of calcium and that it would pass. And it did.

The Rigcalm is just Agnus Castus and magnesium - you could mix it yourself for cheaper and get the straights from Pegasus.

I think if I was you I would try the Rigcalm. His hormones will settle down, but the Rigcalm might get him over this tricky stage.

TBH he is really laid back with things like being clipped, lead, loading etc but he is a nightmare with other horses, he just doesn't respect space both with other horses and humans. He jumped out of his field tonight to be in with my other gelding because the other horses around had gone in and all he did was walk round after him pestering him.

I am working on the human space issue with some NH but asking him to stand still causes a lot of throwing a tantrum, swinging his head to move you out the way and he isn't the most co-ordinated at the mo so ends up standing on me, grrrr!

Just need something to chill him out a bit.

He will settle, we had a colt that would round up another gelding, that was when the cob was around. He fell over his hooves in love with her, now shows no interest and she I'd in season. Out in a mixed herd, no issues.

Eta its amazing how many supplements have magnesium and chaste berry in them, my oestress has chaste berry in it as main ingredient.

NF do you think oestress works as I use it and cant decide if see if any difference. I thought so last year but not convinced this year!

Yes, I found RigCalm did work and is why Harvey is still on it but now only in spring, late autumn when mares seem to have more/worse seasons and about a week before we go to a show in case there are in season mares there. He normally does behave but he has a habit of making mares around him be a bit naughty when he nickers at them!

I would probably just give him time and some manners lessons - friend was told six to eight weeks post gelding he would be safe to turn out with mates from baby perspective - so it shows how long hormones float about etc.

As for mounting geldings, it is a display of dominance rather than wanting to have babies I think!!

Not that I have much experience in this area at all, but I've also heard that it can take a little while after gelding for the hormones to calm down. So it may just be that he hasn't realised his man bits have been stolen :giggle:

I'm sure that the head swishing will stop with practice, he's probably used to being able to muck about with other horses if he's been out with other colts and not handled all that much.

I started her on a maintenance of 10ml 3weeks ago and when I noticed her come into season I increased her up to 20ml. So far yes she only had one asleep day and the others normal grumos etc. But she isn't walking as stiff as she would normally be. So for her yes I have seen a very slight improvement.

.

Honey the swings have gone but the playground is still there. My mare is reversing into this new gelding done last year and he is like what, I cant eat with your bum in my face. She also changes grazing companions, boyfriend is given the hoof and the top mare is favoured.
I find it interesting that a made in season also alters the dynamics.

Well i went and got some rigcalm this morning, he is now jumping out of his field and chasing after other peoples horses when they are being brought in so i need something to calm him down. It was a madhouse up the yard yesterday with horses running everywhere and it was mine that was to blame

He is in disgrace today and has been left in his stable, harsh i know but it's for his own safety until hopefully the rigcalm takes effect. I will try him out again tomorrow.

For a little guy he can't half jump clearing 4ft with ease!

If he was done just over a week ago he isn't out with the mares is he? Just trying to jump in with them.
He will be fertile still, believe that takes a while before he isn't. When our colt was done he was not turned out with main herd for 6 months.

No my horse is gay, he is trying it on with geldings not mares.

I know you were having problems with him jumping the stable too - perhaps it's anxiety at being left alone? New home etc?

I know he is anxious about being alone and he wasn't alone in the field, him and my other gelding are physically in the same field but i do have it sectioned so one in one half and the other in the other half. There are horses in the fields next door too which he can talk to over the fence.

I am going to try him out tomorrow with my other gelding but not so they are sectioned off from one another to see what he does. His attachment to the other gelding (not mine) meant he jumped out of the field he was in, into my other field next door, which he stayed in quite happily for the day until my friend brought her horses in from the field net door to that, he then proceeded to jump the fence again to be near this gelding. My fencing is all electric using the bigger posts.

Why do you have the two geldings sectioned?

Because he was harassing my other gelding and trying to mount him.

They have however been out together today and grazed quite happily side by side with no problems. Just hope it continues.

It will continue I am sure. My gelding was cut very late and bred a foal - wish I had known before I bought him!!

He is infinitely happier out with just geldings. Calmer certainly, no stress, no rounding his mares up all the time.

I think the combination of company and the Rigcalm for a limited amount of time will sort him out.

I do hope so, the silly boy tried to swipe me with his head this morning but as I am attuned to this trick now he missed and ended up lying down on the floor in front of me, my other gelding just stood looking at him as though he was weird! :yellowcarded:
