Hi, I was wondering if any of you Western Riders had come across some where that has a Rodeo bull/Mechanical bull to ride? I have seen them on tV but would like to try it !! (To challenge my horsemanship) If any one knows of one or has ridden one, please let me know wahat it was like and where it was!

Hmmm I had a go on one at a fesitival. Sadly I had a few beers and first attempt I fell straight of the other side before it had even moved :o 2nd attempt I think I managed about 1 second! much to athe amusement of the crowd.. I was like I can ride... I can do this easy! errrm maybe not lol

it's nothing whatsoever like riding a bucking horse. good fun, but not really comparable to a horse at all. i stayed on for a reasonable time, but i was wearing a dress so the crowd had a lovely view of my pants the whole time.

Echo that with my only experience of one! The crowd quickly increased when they saw me clambering on in a rather drunken manner  :D

I have seen an advert for the hanningfield rodeo in Essex which has steer riding and a rodeo bull so might get on the real thing or the mechanical one ......?

Looks like fun to me! I want one! :D

When I was a kid I had been guilty of turning one of those rocking horses on springs at the playground into bucking broncos--I would get 3 or 4 friends to shake/rock/fling the thing like mad and catapult the rider (me) off! :p :D :D

(It was no surprise that the rocking horse at the playground needed repairs after a couple of months!)

They normally have the mechanical bull at the Americana event, its all rock and rool and country singers and lots of stands and stuff, I think its at peterborough show ground around July 4th weekend, but its not cheap to get in so if you only want to go for that its very expensive!
Hanninfield, Not sure who is running that, could be a few people not sure if they will have the mechanical or real steers for riding.
BAR-S (they have a small western riding center a short way from Dartford), also run a rodeo, they are a really nice bunch and the rodeo is good fun and very light hearted, they will normally have real steers for riding (all monitored by the RSPCA and they take the up-most care of them throughout as it is their own cattle and their livelyhood, also they don't use any kind of bucking strap as it is illegal in this country) and it is good fun, a friend of mine won the national title last year (not really such a big deal as they are the only ones in the UK that run any steer riding events, but none the less :D ) they also have alot of other horse events running all weekend etc we normally go along (with or with out the horses) and camp out and have a laugh.
This web page has contacts for hanningfield and the BAR-S event - http://www.wha-of-gb.org.uk

Thye had one in a club where I live, it seemed like such a good idea after a few drinks, and just like everyone else I was super confident I would be awesome at it (after all I used to have a horse just like that :D)
I'm not even sure it had started moving when I fell off!!!!

I didnt realise you lot were such bad riders! I bet a few of you must have been able to ride these bucking bulls!! Where are the real western riders!!

OH went on one at Newton Livery stables in Mullion Cornwall, it was FAB!!!! He really enjoyed it - I didn't bother (I'll stick with the hacking out thanks very much:D :p ) He said it was harder than it looked, and it gave him a headache - he was only on it for about 10 minutes.........

The ones in the UK are different to those in the states that acctually buck (they often have one of the bucking type at the USAF base near us) ;) the ones here have a perfectly smooth and polished seat area, they are made to spin so you slip off, I know lots of very good riders who didn't last more than a few seconds :D

All the mechanical bulls I have seen here in the US buck and spin.

I have to believe that the mechanical bull is much easier that the real thing. This has been confirmed to me by a few people I know who have done both.

With the mechanical variety, the difficulty is really based on the person operating the machine. Just recently, I saw someone ride in a competition for over 30 seconds. In the next round, the operator started with several violent spins (the bucks are easy - it's the spins that knock you off). He didn't last 5 seconds of the spins.

Of course, it you are pretty and wearing a dress (like some other posters described) I'll bet the operator will make the ride a bit easier. :)

I met someone around here that was very good at the mechanical bull. So good, that he asked to ride a real bull at a local barn (the barn does cow-working classes). This was a pretty "tame" bull - not a champion rodeo bull. The guy didn't last a second before he was on the floor. Like I said, the real thing is MUCH more difficult.

I agree totally, the one at the USAF base near here has a much grippier seat and also a longer rope to hold (enough to wrap round your hand) to make it easier, where the UK legal ones I have seen have a stub of rope about 4" long to hold and a totally polished seat, even a professional bull rider (all be it low level in the USA) I know couldn't hang on to the one we had at that event :D but he could normally manage our good size steers (and obviously bulls although I never got to see him ride a big un') really well and often managed 8+ seconds where many couldn't do 3 ;) :D
Its so silly, we can't have the proper buck mechanicals here, my friend tried to buy one from the states to take to fairs and stuff but they can't sell them to the UK apparently The Health and Safty Executive deem them unsafe or some bull like that ;)

I have seen that there are a few real mechanical bulls around, They have one at the newton riding stables in mullion (cornish spirit) This is the sort of bull I wanted to try and ride!! am hoping that the one at the hanningfiled Rodeo show is like it!

Sometimes have then at fairs or festivals.

Also the odd (very sad and tacky) club or bar has them on occasions - but there fun all the same - and even funnier when your drunk. There was a bar that I went to the other side of Notts that had a cowboy and indian night on. They had that and a foam machine. I don;t think I managed to stay on too long though.

We used to do a bit of a sweepstake - won £50 last time for longest stayer.
All good fun - yeah you're right esp when had one or two too many:D

We used to go to a lot of hunt bbq's, nearly always had them there.
Also fairs and stuff. We hired one for my dads b'day, found in yellow pages, was ace.:D
