rug sizes for cobs

My folks are coming down to visit my horse for the first time - they live up near Robinsons and have asked if i need owt (hmm..the entire catalogue! :)) but mainly a new stable rug would be nice!!!

anyway..trouble is i won't get to see my boy til the weekend, they're going to robinsons 2m, but am not sure what his rug size is - cos I bought him with rugs so never bothered measuring!

So just wondering for those who have a 14.2 heavyweight is cob what size of rug you have??? I think someone told me his is 6"3 but this is guesswork..that seems quite big!

My 14.2hh is in a 5ft9 but he is quite narrow for a cob. My other girlie is 14hh & she takes a 5ft6 & she is wide :)

They do vary & I find Robinsons own-brand rugs do come up quite small :)

Would it be too cheeky to phone up the YO and ask her to measure one of your rugs for you? I know it seems a bit mad and she might think you are demented for doing it, esp as you are new to the yard , but it would be worth it. It would be such a shame if your folks turned up with a lovely new rug for the boy and it didn't fit him !

6'3 sounds quite big for a 14.2hh cob - the Big Horse I rode at the RS was in a 6'9 rug and he is 17hh of long-backed WB.

Hero, my 14.hh middle weight cob ( click link on my signature to see him :D ) he is 5'9 to 6'9 <--- Mad isn't it? But it has to be big or it doesn't fit round his chest!

That the problem I have with Kai he is wide but short!!

Echo that about robinsons rugs being small.
I ordered a 5 9 for my welshie (14.3) and it was too long in the back and too small in the chest!
I was gutted! Couldn't be bothered to send it back so flogged it to someone else on yard for a tenner less than i paid for it!

My smallest rug size for cobs is 6.3", one takes a 6'9" I use Masta as they fit cobs well

14.2hh HW cob at our yard is in a 6'6 rug. With a chest extender:eek:
