whats the difference in the weights? i would class a 300g and a 350g both heavyweights but how much of a difference would it make to the horse?

Rebel is currently in a 150g and some nights it doesnt feel as warm as i would like it to so i am looking for a new rug for her, she has a 350g but its too heavy for this time of year

Or does anyone has a set temperature for each weight rugs? how do you decide? i normally go by if i need extra layers the horse needs extra layers.

also does a higher denier make it anymore waterproof as well as stronger?

lots of questions but my head is battered by rugs Argh!!!!

Ok trying to remember your questions!!

Stabled my girl has a 100gram for down to 6degreesish 200 down to bout 1degreesish then a 360gram for below that. Also has 3 weights of fleece to choose from as if I get it slightly wrong she'll sweat, a light thermatex, single layer fleece and a thick faux sheep skin. (All lighter than 100gram)

Outside similar she has a no fill(summer nights if wet, wear fly sheet and dont like it getting wet, and then when clipped but still warm), 100gram, 220gram and 360. All with detachable necks. Similar temps to above but if raining/windy add neck. (has only used 360 6times in 2 years) at mo out at night but soon in at night out during day and been fully clipped since august. Actually very hot horse so if there a strong sun I have to take her down a rug weight to stop her sweating, drives me and YO crazy sometimes!! Sounds slightly in depth but its just trial and error then sticking to what ive found.

I spent months looking for a 100gram stable and turn out as anything above is to heavy. A standard medium weight (2-250) for a normal horse is to hot for Maddy and these are her heavyweights when compared to other horses on yard. So I bought the 100gram as a medium weight. and the heavies vary rarely come out. At mo out at night (6deg) in a 220gram no neck but tomorrow its supposed to be bout 8 deg so she'll be in 100gram, then depending on rain and wind maybe a neck.

I feel that a better denier does effect heat as well as toughness as it does improve water proofness and I think this helps keep them warm, however my girl is in 600d weatherbeeta as they fit her best, I'd like to use 1200d amigo if they fitted!!

Anyway could go on for ages so will stop now (have a slight rug thing if you havent noticed!!)

keep going the more info the better, i am glad to hear that someone else has an issue with a "hot" horse, my big horse is hot all the time, he is fully clipped and i had to take his rug off the other day and leave him naked in the field, he is living out this year so hopefully will get some wear out of his rugs, however rebel is the opposite and is also underweight so she feels cold most of the time

O your gonna drag out my sad fetish with rugs, bit of a geek, its like bags or shoes:o:o

Well like I say my girl wears a 100gm when most are wearing a 220.

If I dont clip her she'll stand in her stable naked and still sweat.

For fuller horses Ive found weatherbeetas 100gram the best, but for stable Ive got a Kingshead 100g as it was all on the market at the time however its a lovely rug, they used to do 100, 200, 300, 400gram stable and turnout but not seen them around for a while. stable shires do a 200(supposed medium), masta 170(supposed light) and horseware a 220(supposed medium) so all rug companies have their own scales. When i went looking to buy a new set (she'd out grown the old ones) I new she'd need 200ish as a heavy then i just worked around that 100ish as a light and 300ish as back up xtremeheavy. However i am a weatherbeeta fan due to fit and all her rugs are weatherbeeta except stable 100g(kingshead) stable 200g(shires) thick fleece(masta was in sale and its just gorgeous!!) and her light wick thermatex.

For finer horses i only know of Fal that do a lighter range and they do a 40 gram as well as a 100g, however their not cheap, at last I remember the 40gram was £90!!

And for heavier rugs look at shires/masta they do a 400g and I THINK a 500gram. If you want a bargain go on ebay and look at ruggles they do a 100 and 400, however i know absolutely nothing about them and how they hold up.

A friend of mine has a Rambo supreme heavy with detachable neck but also uses it as a medium as its so breathable he never sweats in it. however not cut for the broader equine.

My dartmoor is unfortunately not as hardy as she should be. She's normally fine unless she gets wet, then she freezes. So she's got a no fill however if proper rain it gets wet threw so she has a 220g amigo with detachable neck. She only wears the combo if its really horrid (out in day in at night in winter). However I think as she gets older she may need a heavy so she'll prob get a 360 amigo turnout.

For stable she has a light thermatex for when is she's wet or bathed, quick wick. She also has a sheep faux fleece for if she's bit nippy and a masta 170g stable for when its minus, she has a full coat and is much better at regulating her temp either up or down. however she is 16 and does get stiff so she is babied more than she should be!!:p:p

Wow!!! Im getting too into this thread its making me think,
what i have !!
what i need!!!
makes me feel like shopping..

Wow, some really good info in this thread. The only thing I would say is that I would leave it as late as possible (without compromising wellbeing of course) before changing to a heavier rug to ensure that the horse gets the best benefit of the added fill during the really cold winter nights. Also consider layering and full necks...

Logan was getting so skinny in the spring despite wearing a HW rug and eating (literally) like a horse. Were we are we always gets a cold wind blowing up the valley so I changed his HW rug to a full-neck LW with just a fleece underneath and he straight away started looking better, it just seems that he was feeling really cold along his neck.

I really want one of the Weatherbeeta Tristar, will get one for Spotnik next year and when Logan is fully grown I will get him one too.

I have one of the 40g FAL rugs for my 22 year old TB. I find he's just not warm enough in a no fill rug, but anything heavier he overheats when it is sunny. Then at night I pop his 200g rug on. That's at this time of year.

My mare has a trace clip, and so is usually in a l/w no fill rug during the day, and 100g rug at night now, because she is quite a hot bod.

For my oldie I have a 40g, 200g, 350g and 400g in case it is very, very cold.

For my girl I have a no fill l/w, 100g, 200g and 350g. Last winter she didn't wear her heavy rug, but she wasn't clipped at all.

Hope this helps! :D

I found a 40g invaluable too. If its really wet and the no fill gets soaked it makes him cold, the 40g keeps the cold outer off him and he's fine. Unfortunately my 40g has seen better days. I noticed that the Fal 40g are a much lighter rug than my old ripstop one and the wind blows them around so I have started putting 2 lightweights on my lad and it does the trick like the 40g. Also makes use of a leaky old lightweight.

Neck covers are fantastic I think they automatically keep them warmer. We lose heat throour heads and I think horses must thro their necks.

Isnt rug shopping delightful.

Rug shopping is simply the best thing,,,,, I have just ordered a Rambo Duo from Rideaway with a 100 and 300 liner,,, the rug itself is 100 so i get 100 200 and 400 ...and has a detachable neck,,,,
in blue with i think a silver or something binding,,,,
is coming tuesday,, can,t wait....
:):):)

right i think i am more confuzed then before

right horse in question Rebel, standarbred very underweight when bought with a four month foal at foot. has had a no fill rainsheet on since i bought her then changed her into a 150g fill about 4 weeks ago, in the very cold nights she feels not as warm as i would like her to underneath. not clipped just coming back into light work, prep for weaning, and i need a heavier rug but not too heavy as i have a 350g for her.

so everyone who loves rug shopping, find me a 6ft 3 mediumweight full neck, not shires as chest fits horrible, not more than £60................enjoy shopping with my money
