On Tueday I fell from my gorgeous mare. It was bad riding more than anything. She saw a dog come into the school unexpectly, and turned quicker than I expected a sort of mini spook, but not a real one. I came out the side door. Sadly my food stayed to long in the stirrup. Ive chipped my navilcular bone( on the top of my foot) and got quite major soft tissue damage on the inside of my foot. I cant walk and am on crutches. I used the bendy stirrups.

When I start riding again I want safe quick release sirrups. Recomendations please.

Im an adult with size 6/40 shoes.

Mountain horse SCS system?
Peacock?

Any one had a fall and they actually done the job and released.

Thanks
or something else.

I am sorry about your foot.
You say you used bendy stirrups. Do you mean Sprenger?

Did you get your foot trapped in a Sprenger?
And was the Sprenger big enough for the boots you were wearing.

I use them too and wonder if I should take this as a warning.

Ouch! Sorry about your foot! I'd say plain old peacocks would be absolutely fine and much cheaper than the Mountain Horse ones. I have the peacocks my parents bought for me when I was eight (now 26!!) on my jumping saddles (I have size 3 feet so they still fit) and they are still going strong. Sometimes simple is best! Hope your foot gets better soon and you don't have to stay out of the saddle for too long! xx

not the sprenger some similar ones. Think it was basically bad luck. I ride with these stirrups most days sometimes twice so my chance of an accident is higher than someone riding less frequently. But Im now on a limitation exercise and want to protect me. Cant wait to ride again though.

Oh yes. Stirrups were the right size for foot etc.

All of my saddles have bent leg irons on and haven't had a problem ..as yet, tempting fate now aren't I...:eek:
I am not overly keen on peacock irons, the rubber perishes and can get caught on things. Also the stirrups obviously cannot be as strong as only one side is metal, some a friend used to ride in were really bent out of shape..the foot rest part was bending away from the stirrup.

not the sprenger some similar ones.

This a bit vital. I bought a similar pair once - cheaper, in a larger size for my winter boots. But my impression was that the look alikes dont flex the same as Sprengers, i.e. only in one direction. They dont twist, as a Sprenger might.

However, if you foot was only caught momentarily, though that is bad, it is not as bad as being dragged by your horse or your foot really stuck, which is what happened to me before I bought the Sprengers.
Though you have a broken bone (sorry), you were relased from the stirrup. I myself am not keen to change to another type.

I'm off Mountain HOrse clothing - but I cannot recommend enough their stirrups - I have the sc3 - and I don't have the matching boots, but I didn't buy them for that, I bought them for the safety aspect, as I'd been using peacocks and realised that I was too heavy for them (shouldn't be over 9 stone to use them). They aren't the cheapest but I have to say they are well worth the money. My OH has them and also has the corresponding boot and he raves about them - he used to do quite a lot of jumping (so anticipated falling off!!!) and he thinks they're brill.

I bought bent iron ones for my (ex)OH and his huge I-will-not-wear-riding-boots feet.

Come to think of it-I have no idea where they are-he better not have taken them.

I do heard there was a weight limit on peacocks, although I thought it was lower than 9st (I thought about 7.5st)

i know somebody that had safety stirrups, horse spooked her foot got trapped in stirrup and she was dragged, luckily her boot came off otherwise she would have been dragged for a fair bit as this pony just does not stop when rider falls off.
so i dont really know how well all these actually work

Have you thought about caged endurance stirrups? I have these and it is IMPOSSIBLE for your foot to go right through. Plus they are very wide tread and padded so are very comfy for aching joints and give a great feeling of security.

I'd recommend the Mountain Horse SCS stirrups (I also have the boots).

They are expensive, mine were a Christmas present and I think the boots were about £100 and the stirrups about £50 but I've had them 18 months and they are as good as the day I had them, so hopefully they'll last years.

I've ridden two horses with safety stirrups, and when i fell off them both, both stirrups have pinged off. These were peacock safety stirrups. I'd recommend them.
I have a size 5/6 mountain horse boots and have a 4 3/4 stirrup but i could have had a 4 1/2

Peacocks are out then on weight grounds, Mountain horse still a contender. I wasnt draged as much as foot was twisted and stirup sliced bone( its hard to explain) didnt break skin but took a bit off the bone.

The Barnes buckles look interesting. User reports?

I use the bent-iron stirrups, I've found them to be super. I have peacocks as well, which, although (sadly!) over 9 stone, I use when I lightly hack about. The main danger with peacocks (apart from perishing rubber) is when jumping - obviously more weight goes into the stirrups, and being as only one side is metal, they take a lot of strain.

I'd also like a pair of icelandic double bent-iron stirrups, Wally, are they comfy / balanced to use? Do they feel odd at all? Just curious, never met anyone who uses them! THANKS!

I have a pair of Sprenger stirrup irons somewhere, I crazed for them for a birthday present, used them a couple of times and hated them! Personal preference, but I like my bent-iron stirrups!
