What do think is the best?

I am currently using Sedaline but find it completely unpredictable. Sometimes Ben is ok and others (like tonight) he is a fruit loop. I physically couldn't walk him tonight as it would have put him in danger of injuring his tendon further. I don't know what set him off.

He was injected with ACP last night by A (vet) so I could trot him up and down for her a few times and assess his leg without risking me hanging off the end of the lunge line. He was brilliant - he was was awake and aware of stuf and trotted easily, but it's like his nervous system was dead or something, completely chilled, like the Ben I know.

I'm going to research ACP and others tonight and see if I can chat to A tomorrow and get something else. I am hoping to up the sedaline first of all to 4ml, maybe 5ml if needs be.

Can anyone tell me anything about them before I go off searching? I know sedaline is ok for long term use, but what about ACP? Can you get ACP in an oral form (I always thought it was oral, until she injected it last night :o). Are there any other sedatives I can look up and chat to A about?

Sedalin and acp are the same drugs in different forms ..acp is in tablets for home administration. There is a new one our that our vet mentioned as being a bit stronger ..not sure of its name but I though it started dom...

You can basically give a whole tube of sedalin to a horse..we did once accidentally when the ring broke! However I find that the horses only really react to it if they are totally calm before hand and it often takes time to act. We tend to give small dose, wait, give more, wait etc.

Domosedan gel, is the latest one available.

Haven't used it myself but my dentist thought it worked better on some horses than sedalin.

Someone on here recently, I think used it for shoeing.

I have the new strong one but my vet will only give it to the most trusted clients as it's very potent and only takes a small amount to rub on the gums to work.

I used to use Sedalin but it was useless, even after the whole tube it hardly took the edge of and ACP what a waste of money.

I have to use sedative for clipping my boy, why not speak to you vet about it.

Domosedan Gel, you squirt it under the tongue half an hour before needed. More effective than sedalin, not quite as potent as IV sedation, but pretty close. Vet needs to check horses's general fitness (ie heart etc), but it works very well and is easier than having the vet out to inject.

A did say that ACP was Sedalin but injectable basically - so pretty much the same. But somehow the ACP worked a lot better than the Sedalin, so not sure why that happened? Maybe because it was IV administered...?

I think that's the issue, elm, that when he's already slightly on edge, it just doesn't work at all. if he's still qute chilled in his stable or tied up then he's a dream to lead out. Unfortunately he needs leading out daily, so need a more potent alternative it seems.

I'll have a quick look at the Demosedan and see what it's like/effects/side effects/unwanted effects. I need some sort of sedative for the next 4-6 weeks minimum so need something sorted really.

They seem the three main sedatives then that vets prescribe out for horseowners' use? I'll see if I can speak to A tomorrow and ask her if I can try something else. Trials and tribulations...!!

Cassiebird, did your vet say why they don't prescribe ACP anymore, I hadn't heard that?

I cant remember:frown: They gave me the last of their tablet form in October. If my brain decides to recall the reason I will let you know:smoke:

Ok, it was something to do with 10mg doseage not being licensed for equine use, only for cats or dogs???? Something like that anyway. Cass was having 12 at a time and that barely touched the sides.......

I don't have a stallion... :D

But I have just read that ACP paste, gel or IV isn't great for long term use as can cause 'prolasped penis' in male horses - both geldings and stallions, which doesn't sound great.

ACP is out of the running now. I have done a bit on looking at Demosedan too. Looks like it was injectable first of all and thne became orally available? Dfferent experiences of it though, much like the other sedatives. I think it's trial and error to be honest... :(

A lot of the site I have looked up have said that the horse should be kept in a calm, quiet and dark (if possible?) place with limited distractions and reason to get hyped up. If something does trigger a spark this practically un does all the sedatives' work...?! Which explains today I guess. He was stood down the end of the barn nice and quiet when all of a sudden something spooked him and that was that really - walking out wasn't easy. We tried for 5 mins and had to abondon :(
