Does anyone have any experience of the breed?

When I described what my future horse would be my friend mentioned this breed but I don't know anything about them.

One of my previous horses, Del, was a Selle Francais and my current horse is Selle Francais x Irish Sports Horse, related to my last Selle Francais on that side. I don't know anything about their history so can only really comment on my experiences with them as an owner.

Del's job was show-jumping and he competed successfully at International level up to 1.40m. He's quite stocky but was very quick, brave, scopey and careful, he really tried and when he was on form we were unbeatable. However when he had one on him nothing could make him jump and he did eventually end his own career. He wasn't what I'd call an affectionate horse - he did pull faces and although he was never nasty you did get the sense he was only tolerating you a lot of the time. Again though, as a sports horse when he was on I can't fault him.

My current horse is a bit different personality wise. He's very friendly and enjoys attention but - like Del - when he has had enough he's had enough. But saying that he will stand for hours to be fussed over if he's in the mood - which is most of the time - and loves being groomed. He's only 4 but he shows lots of similar ability to Del. Clean, brave, scopey jump who will also be very quick. Both horses are naturally big striding and quick over the ground without necessarily being forward. Both work comfortably in an outline, both are very much of Warmblood build although Del was a lot more compact, being full SF. Both have good legs with good bone and good feet. Both have good stamina, both are very brave. And while both really have their quirks, none of these are dangerous. Del used to kick out a lot when jumping (I'll link to a video) whereas Troy has threatened to rear on occasion. Neither are overly strong to ride although both have a tendency to lean. Both have ponyish brains despite being 17hh (Del) and 16.2hh (Troy) which is what attracted me to them, they're able to get themselves out of difficult situations and generally have 'happy' expressions.
It's worth saying as well that both are very good with me both on the ground and in the saddle given their size and strength in relation to my 5ft petite frame.

Well, they are sports horses. That's what they're bred for, they're natural athletes and extremely versatile, and have a very workmanlike and willing attitude. They're known for their good temperament. The French are so proud of the Selle Francais that in breeding and competition circles they have very little interest in anything else - it is also the main blood in pony breeding here.

Unixe is an unbroken 4 year old going for meat - he is in the very last chance saloon. He is in Calvados so transport costs would be more reasonable - he is said to be very very nice and ready to break in.

I'm in Calvados, do you know any more about his location? Breeding? He's just the sort of project my boss might be interested in if he has good papers and moves well.

i have sent you a pm, there are there 2 youngsters 4-5 unbroken in Calvados, others are further south, there is one poor 20 year old ex brood mare. This is the other one, he is selle x quarterhorse.

I have passed the links below, you need to log in and then you can see the full details and send messages.

There are 2 selle foals, born 2012 also but they are not in Calvados

my friend has a Selle Francais x Welsh mare....shes a 'handful', grumpy to tack up, opinionated to ride - but when goes well has a FANTASTIC jump on her!

my yard owner has a Selle Francais x TB, her gelding is also an amazing jumper, was a bit tricky to back originally supposedly but has turned into a fantastic eventer.

i know someone else with a Selle Francais x shire - he is an absolute gem, does have a good jump, but has a very gentle nature.

My livery mate has a fantastic cob mare who competed at everything and whom she put to a Selle stallion to breed her horse of a lifetime.

The resultant filly is a pretty girl (with one small conformational defect which could happen to anyone), moves well, very athletic but very very opinionated and bolshy.

This might not be Dad's fault though!

Thanks guys! Shaka your boys are beautiful!

I describe my future horse and chunky but with athletic ability, so they do seem to fit the bill, though I'm not sure if I would be keen on any opinionated-ness or grumpyness. I don't compete so it would mainly be a leisure horse I was looking for (but who would have the potential to do SJ, dressage or eventing if I wanted to...which I would want to give a try when I have my own).

That's not known for being a typical character trait. One of the reasons they have become such an influence in pony breeding is because they are known for their good temperament. But horses are individuals just like people, and any horse can be grumpy if they so wish, it's not necessarily anything to do with their breeding!

There are two main types of SF - they are warmbloods, so some of them can be pretty solid-looking (though not particularly thick-set like a cob for example), but the Thoroughbred and Arab influences can also produce a much finer, daintier type.

Some of the 3- and 4-year-olds I saw at a National Stud show this year -

Definitely see the Arabian influence here

More solid types

Our 5-y-o mare Demi is one of the finer types.

While Toscane another 5-y-o mare is more stocky.

And Paddy, a 6-y-o gelding we sold recently, was very different to our others, only 15.2 and much more compact.
