Im thinking of putting Skye in foal next year as she'll be 5. It will be her first time. She's 38 inches. I will be keeping the foal. And i use to work at 2 different studs so i know what to expect.
But there is quite a few stallions out there. i preferable want a stud near Nottingham. But does any body really recommend any where as this will be the first time i've actually bred from any of mine.
oh p.s her stud name is kendal sky if you wanted to know.
thanks x

How big and what are her parents?

Lots to consider, have a look back at grand parents and great grandparents, see what is in there before you decide on a stallion to go with your mare.

It is Abbots Zak or Abbotsbury Zak?
Hose and Northwells are well known BIG blacks. so she might throw you something big, even put to a smaller stallion.

I told my daughter, when she wanted a foal from her beloved Shetland mare, the one question. Would you be prepared to lose the mare?

I am not saying that your mare will die having a foal but you must be aware of the risks involved and if you are prepared to take them.

Also, as it is her first foal, I would aim for a stallion either slightly smaller or similar size. Do not go for a bigger stallion as this could cause complications. This means your foal may well be smaller than 38" which is a midi height. For my stallion, I would look at temperament first, conformation and breedlines plus colour.

yes thought long and hard about this

yes daddy is abbotsbury Zak. lovely chap. this is why im struggling to find a stallion as my friend breeds Morjoy mini Shetlands. she lost a mare because the foal was too big!

Abbotsbury Zak

Hi Linz

I am new to this forum/ website and found it when I googled Abbotsbury to pass the time of day!! I own Zak's sire Abbotsbury Jasper now 25 years young and it is really great to find sons and daughters of our Abbotsbury ponies and hear how they are getting on. Zak is a great lad and has his father's temperament and good looks! lol

I would love to recommend a couple of stallions which are chestnut but not sure which colour you would prefer foal wise? Temperament is really important in a stallion - I have met some devils! Not really near nottingham but I am in Lincoln.

Who was your pony's dam? Hose ponies are of course black so presume your mare is black or bay?

Would be great to hear more about her

Hello there!

We had a dear little mare whose father was Abbotsbury Urquhart! (sp?)

I think...not havng the passport in front of me anymore it was this little lady.....every inch a dear little working mare. Temperament to die for.

This is her, near side wheeler. We used her for trying out new things as she was so good.

Arty!!! Well great to hear about his offspring too! His brother UB went abroad but they were both lovely as babies. I knew Arty was up in Scotland as was Maestro (used to be at the Kellas stud). Tempest is at the Dryfesdale stud but so great to find all these ponies out there.

I used to groom for FEI team and a single pony but I really want to get into driving Shetlands again. Used to drive for a friend her 2 Abbotsbury ponies on picnic drives.

You look like you and your ponies know how to really enjoy and use themselves.

What a great place to lve as well!

Your stallion

Your stallion has a beautiful manly head! That photo of his head - with the foal - is gorgeous. when I work out how to put up pics and the like i will show you my old man Jasper.

Get a photobucket account, then use the .....[IMG/] link , cut and paste onto the reply page.

Her name is Kendal sky, stable name is skye. Her dam is Kendal Nevis who is out of Heckla of drakelaw, Sire i can't remember.
She's a lovely sweet girl knew her since birth brought her at 6 months old but didn't get her registered till last year as i miss placed her passport.
As for stallion talk, i would like a smallish stallion as she is only 9.1hh, and i believe the breeder said they have hose and northwell breeding somewhere which they can produce quite big ponies which i don't want her to struggle as i don't want to lose her. also i would like a stallion with good tempermant. I don't really care for colour i just want the right stallion.
