showing shetlands in hand

hey.. i'm going to be showing a shetland stallion in hand . whats the best thing to wear (i'm guessing trousers, shirt, tie and waistcoat??) and what sort of bridle should he wear? thanks!! i'm not used to these small ponies...!!

I wear trousers, shirt and tie and a hacking jacket or a waistcoat. I also have one of them aussie suede hats. If the pony is black you should have light trousers, if he is light coloured you should wear dark trousers.

A stallion would need to have a bridle with a bit either an inhand bridle if you have one or just a normal cavesson one. Stallions can be show with the brass stallion show bit. I use a leather lead rein with a brass newmarket chain and take a black cane. Make sure your shoes are comfortable for running in. Johdpur boots are ideal.

Here's a pic of me for an idea, my jacket is not very nice cause it was the only one in the shop before the show i would prefer to wear a waistcoat or plain coloured body warmer :

My daughter is still young enough to get away with her smart riding gear!she always seems to do well!she usually puts him in a hunter type bridle.

Pony looks really messy here but it was the christmas show,so hairy coat obligatory!!

Now, I brought this issue up with the confusion that is the SPSBS, they say in their website that only English snaffles are allowed and no other kind of bit.

I have seen Shetlands shown for donkey's years in metropolitan/horsehsoe Liverpool bits. I too show our stallion in a metropolitan and have had no comments from judges to the contrary.

As yet they have not, (and probably never will until I chase them) replied to my question. it is not unusual for the SPSBS to have rules pointing in all directions.

BTW, that is not a messy Shetland, that is a spotlessly clean Shetland in a winter coat! Messy he is not, fuzzy he is!

I wear a Fair Isle Jacket, dark trousers, stock , gloves and a hat and a show cane.

Should mini shetlands be show to the same rules as a standard shetland?

Yes, Mini and Standard Shetlands come under the same rules.

Mini horses come under a separate rule book.

this may be a stupid question but how do you go about putting shetlands in a horse box? even the lowest setting for the bars in my horse box would be over his head and the breast and tail bars would definitely be too far apart!!
(they have just cancelled my local show so now i need to go further afield!)

We made specially low breast bars for our trailer.

Ours is a livestock trailer designed for travelling cattle lose, so they don't have any kind of bar. We have it partitioned in half in case we wnt to travel mixed groups, Also have a lorry and they all go in there lose and do their own thing.

I just tie mine up and he doesnt move, breast bar is above his head

so you are allowed to travel them loose then are you? well we have a livestock trailer as well so maybe i'll do that..

It depends upon where you are and how many jobsworths you are likely to run into.

I travel mine lose because they are happier that way.
