I know how to plait with those bands, not very well, but hey!!!:p

should i sow the plaits or use them bands?

plus, how do you sow plaits and what do you need to do it with.....its for tomorow so asap please;)

If you've never sewn plaits before I'd use the bands as you already know exactly how to do them.

you ust roll them up like you do with bands bt put the neddle and thread though and wrap around and though again (its really hard to explain) i perfer sowing but its personal chose!!

I always sew plaits, I HATE rubber band plaits, I cannot make them look good.

Ok, will have to try and play with it then, anyne else know how to sew?

I use both.

I tie the end of the plait with a rubber band, and then sow it up, and then to make it really secure i use a rubber band over the string. They NEVER come out.

To sow it up, fold it in half and sew in, wrap the string round the plait, and then in half again and wrap the string around a few times then tie the string and cut.

It took me a few go's to figure out the best way to do plaits but this way works the best for me.

Oh yeah. and use plenty of hairspray and water. Makes them easier to put in, and they stay in place longer, and you get all sticky out bits.

I dont use bands at all because I think its so much easier using thread. Bunch your manes using bands and then plait 1 as normal, when you get to the end push your needle through the middle of the plat at the bottom and go around one side and back through the middle then go the other side and back through the middle, then bend the plait in half and thread the needle through the bulk of the plait, fold in half again and keep doing this until you have a lovely ball. I love plaiting so if your unsure pm me!

I used to always sow because you get a nice finish but it can be very time consuming and I am much quicker plaiting with bands.

I sow by doing the plait as usual and put a band in the end.

Then sow a couple of stitches at the end of the plait by the band and pass the need through the base of the plait being careful not to stab the horses neck, this will fold the plait in half.

Then pass the need through the end of the plait at the fold and pass back into the base by the horses neck this will fold it in half again, then you can secure it by doing more stitches at the base.

Practice makes perfect so I wouldn't do it for tomorrow do when you have plenty of time to have a go.

for showing you must sew the plats in- it keeps them tighter and it looks nice and neat ;)
as for tomorrow i would advise to stick with platting bands, one time in my showing class even the girl who won got told off for using bands :p
to stich them in you just do it as you normaly would and each time you tuck it up do a couple of stiches round the plait; it's actualy esier imo :D

If its showing you should use thread, but my friends showed to county level and won many times with bands in (although were brilliant at plaiting) but any other discipline you can band in!!!!

To sew in plait down tightly then put needle through and wrap around bottom to secure then i twist loose ends of hair around and wrap cotton around and put the needle through so it is coming out of the bottom of the plait pointing to the floor.

Then push the needle through the top of the plait (at crest of horse) and pull plait upwards so it makes a loop. Thread the needle down the loop through hair so it joins the loop together then again ends up at the bottom of the plait facing downwards. Then do all that again so it rolls it tightly at the crest then stitch through and back again until secure. You then can either cut thread at top or underneath if has been through plait a few times it wont come out!!!!!

I dont like to see the thread wrapped around the outside as you might as well plait with bands. If you follow the hair the thread will blend in and you can plait a black mane with white thread and never see it!!!!!!!

Plaited with bands for dressage

my mare was once plaited up for a show for me by a girl on the yard, done the night before and well stiched - she spent ages they were perfect the next morning. my sewed plaits look rubbish, so i stick to bands as i get a better result. good sewed plaits far outweigh bands though.

I'd rather see well banded plaits than poorly stitched plaits.

However, I do find sewing easiest (and neatest, and keeps the plaits in the best), and I have a native (that I don't plait!).
