Zola had a swollen teat in summer 06 and she was milking. We had the vet out, she wasnt pregnant nor did she have mastitis. The vet told us to keep an eye on it and not to milk it incase she was having a phantom pregnancy in which case she would just keep producing milk. He said it could be being produced as a result of something (i forget now!) from clover in the grass. He told us that if it got sore and there was heat, to call him back as it could be mastitis.

I looked today, and she had some dried milk. I thought it was really strange as for the last 7 months there hasnt been any. It was also swollen again. Just to check, i squeeed it to see if milk came out, but none did.
It cant be swollen from the clover, as they have hardly any grass in thier field, let alone clovers!!!

It isnt at all warm and she didnt mind me touching it. I was wondering if anyone else had come across this before and what it was?

Got a pic to give you and idea:

Any help appreciated =)

Our 26 year old welsh mare used to swell up a bit from time to time in her udders - if you squeezed gently, cleary white "milk" would come out.

She wasn't tender, red, hot, excessively swollen, no yellow / green / yuck discharge or rash / lumps. She was not pregnant, though had been in the past. It didn't seem to bother her at all.

So we just watched & waited & it went away, over a few weeks I recall (this was ages ago).

Never knew if it was her hormones / phantom pregnancy / something she ate / whatever.

I agree with the vet re not milking or may encourage it.

I'd keep a daily check and set a deadline, eg if not gone in x refer to vet again?

hi, there's an ex brood mare on my yard who still produces milk occasionally - the owners say this is because of her mothering past but this could be rubbish!;)

has your mare had a foal or lost one?

Nope =( Well, normally you can tell by like, saggy udders and a belly shape cant you? When she's not fat through grass, shes got a normal shaped stomach. Old owner never said anything about a foal and theres nothing in the passport, so im pretty sure she hasnt.

Thanks for the replies =)

I have no advice on this one... but I'm amazed you were brave enough to get that close under a horse to get that picture!!! :o

Lol!! I think that if she didnt look like a mare and have the lady features, anyone would think she was a gelding!! She the most un-mareish mar ei know =P I can touch them to milk her with out a flinch too... =P

hi, when i bought an imported belgian mare she had dried milk on her teats, i was told by the dealer that she hadn't ahd a foal (although i thought her ribs looked like they had been expended) - the vet said it was too hard to tell. i later found out that it was likely she had had a miscarriage.

how is she today?

Did the vet mention epsom salts to dry up the milk ?

Maybe worth asking him/her - not too much though as they can cause a laxative effect

Hi
My mare has had several foals (going on the size of her udders) and hers really swelled up last year when she was on box rest, I called the vet in a flap and he gracefully said on examining her that "due to her pendulous udders" where a horse's legs may swell due to inactivity, in her the nearest gravitational area for the fluid to go to was her udders. The next day she was out as she had been shod and by the time she came in they had gone down.

I have been keeping an eye onthem over the last few months as we have been on very restricted turnout and I put in time to get her moving more, walks etc. Interestingly it also happened to a gelding's bits, same issues, immobility, time in stable etc

If something in your daily regime has changed or like most of us you are keeping her in more due to teh wet etc, it may be that.

I know this thread hasnt been up for ages.

But Honeys teats have swollen up BAD.
she doesnt like me touching them, or going round the back of her.
Had the vet out, and doesnt think shes pregnant, but shes going out for a scan tomorrow morning.

could she be pregnant?
because she doesnt like me touching her belly, or anything.

I really dont want her to be pregnant
And apparently if they swell up like the size of Honey's, she has 2-6 weeks before she gives birth...
