if you have a horsey that rubs his/her tail - have you had any success in using a tail guard in the stable or when turned out even?
tail guards - any good in stable?

Before i decided to put a guard on i'd try and find out why she is rubbing. It might need a good wash.
If it's sweet ich then putting a guard on would make it hot and even itcher.

if a tail guard is on tight enough to stay up (unless it's one of the ones that fastens to the rug) then it is too tight to leave on for any length of time.
would agree the root cause needs sorting rather than the symptoms - some rub when too hot, in which case a tail guard will make it worse, or if it slips and then tightens or annoys the horse so they rub more to get it off.
some also rub when they've been washed - petal is a rotter for rubbing her tail after a show, she does it for three or four days until the grease builds back up. so you could try a good wash, but it may make things worse! we havealso had success on our sweet itchy school pony with human exzema cream - eurax is a good one.

he isnt rubbing at the mo. It's just his prvious owners said he did in the summer and you can see where the hair is growing back. He doesnt rub his mane. I dont think they ever really tried to deal with it though and just clipped his tail
Im trying to address it early, before spring kicks in. Have started adding garlic to feed to build up in his system and am adding linseed oil for coat (can also ease itching). Have got fly rug and various fly sprays & lotions at the ready

Kia gets severe sweet itch (if thats what Blue has) and he rubs everything!!!
I use the Killitch which is basically beny benzoate and it works a treat!!! i apply it twice a week if the weather is dry and 3/4 if the weather is really wet (in summer).
I use fly rugs as well but the proble is is that iff he rubs and the rug gets caught in the fence and he tries to get away you end up with a trashed rug

My pony sometimes rubs her tail through boredom when stabled if she's on a yard where there is too much grazing. We used a cottage craft tailguard with tail bag, tied to an elasticated surcingle. It worked a treat and saved her tail so we could carry on showing. I got a replacement one from ebay for about a fiver!!

And echo finding the cause. It does sound like he has mild sweetitch. I would be treating it as that from the word go as prevention is better than cure. Find a substance that works for your horse and get him a good sweetitch rug.
I have just bought one from robinsons specifically for this purpose - it cost me £15 and stays on really well but it is not tight. It is rubbery on the inside and so grips as oppesed to being tights and it loosely convers the dock area. It has velcro further down to wrap around tail. It had solvd the problem. Rosie likes to rub as it feels nice - lip goes etc! Even if she rubs with this on, it would not slip but it actually seems to have stopped her trying to do rub now. I think it is made by 'proffessional choice' and is from America. Anyway, it saves the worry of over tight tail bandages by using grip as opposed to tightness.

a horse up the road only went a 40min trip in the trailor and its tail cut down to the bone!!!!no idea how the owner managed that!
my mare rubs teh top of her tail when mane & tail conditioner is put in it - i've seen a couple of horses do this over the years so if i have to use it i spray it at the bottom of the tail and dont let it get near the dock.
maybe he's sensitive to that too?
