Does anyone know what the gentlest effective tapewormer is?

Tha last two times that I've tapewormed Jim he's been mildly colicky & not right that evening & a bit dull the next day too. I've used Equitape as it fits in with Equest & in the past it hasn't caused problems so I don't know why it is now, but IMO twice is too much to be coincidence.

Can any worming experts give me some ideas? I don't want to change the rest of my worming programme if I can help it as the Equest doesn't upset his slightly delicate stomach. Ideally I'd get a blood test done to see if I need to worm for tapes at all but the silly boy is needle shy &, surprise surprise, taking bloods is likely to trigger a colic . I shall probably have a chat with the vet before I do him for tapes again.

Would be interested in the outcome, my chap cant cope with most wormers following a bad virus a couple of years back. Tapewormed in the spring and he got v sick again. Clear worm counts thru the summer and just recently but will get blood test done for tapes when his flu tet and teeth are done this month. But then if blood test shows positive for tapeworm have the problem of what to give him!

so v grateful if you do manage to get some good advice if you could bear to post!

Unfortunately there is really no such thing as a 'gentle' wormer. They are designed to do a killing job.
As far as tapes go you only have the choice of two chemicals, praziquantel which is in Equitape and all the combi wormers, or pyrantel double dose as in Strongid p.

If your horse reacts badly then I would definitely discuss it with your vet and also try to get the blood test done rather than worm routinely, even if he is not keen on needles.

Hope it goes well.

Thanks Gill, even though it wasn't the answer I wanted to hear! I'm definately going to have a chat with the vet before the spring & see what she thinks - sometimes I think nothing's straightforward with him!
